“Adolph Whitman, a packinghouse employe, was killed by John Richter, a fellow-workman, yesterday. Both men were employed in Guthman, Leppeis, & Co.’s packinghouse on Halsted, near Fortieth street, and were making preparations to resume their work after the noon rest when the trouble occurred. Whitman, winking at others of the workmen standing about, grabbed a piece of refuse meat and struck Richter in the the face with it. With an oath Richter then drew his butcher knife from his belt and plunged it into Whitman’s left breast. Whitman fell to the floor and died almost instantly. His assailant threw his knife into pail of water and coolly started to leave the building, but was detained by those standing about, and oddly have been roughly handled by them but for the prompt arrival of the patrol wagon. Together with the body of his victim he was bundled into the wagon and driven to the Englewood police station. Arrived there, he called for a pipe and tobacco, and remarked occasional as he placidly smoked in his cell: “You no fool again, Adolph. You no fool again.”

The dead man leave wife and family living on Paulina, near Forty-sixth street. He was about 40 years old.”
