Annon-Guy: What's your opinion on Machine and Robot characters in fighting games?
Robo-Ky and Bedman? are noteworthy examples.
Long story short, I'm a rather huge mecha fan, in case it's not obvious.
Justice (from the first Guilty Gear) was part of the reason I latched on to this series in the first place. It's just a shame Ishiwatari didn't have the wherewithal planned to keep her in the Roster up to now...
Robo-Ky, while something of a parody character, was also an inspiration from old KOF games like Riot of the Blood Iori and Blood Riot Leona Heidern... Even Rasetsumaru was born from such alternate ideas (Rasetsumaru was an Evil version of Haohmaru, much like Kage/Evil Ryu is the counterpart to Ryu in Street Fighter).
To this day I have very much enjoyed Robo-Ky Mark 2's incarnation in Guilty Gear Isuka, which allowed you to fully customize your own version of the character... I'd be blown away if Strive ever brought back that concept again: including customizing Robo-Ky's movelist!
As for Bedman, Romeo's a complex character, as is his sister Delilah, so I'd be remiss to say they aren't great characters. The Bedframe itself takes a lot of inspiration from previous ideas and puts them in a single character as a walking Death-machine.
In GG2 Overture (for example) Valentine's boss form had Elbow Chainsaws she could strike opponents with as weapons... previously, imagining such a character in Strive might have seemed like a Pipe Dream, until you notice that's EXACTLY what makes Bedman so appealing as a character! Spinning blades akimbo!
Not exactly a "dream character" (no pun intended), but Bedman checks a few boxes in terms of interest!
Suffice to say, beyond this point, I look forward to whatever NEW IDEAS Team Red comes up with moving forward!
Perhaps they'll even apply this line of thinking to Role-Playing Games as a Genre one day!
