Things I Learned in Med School - Wk 137-138
So I think (3 blocks in) I’ve worked out that my 4th year apathy means I’m apparently only posting once every 2 weeks this year. On the plus side - I’m now in what should be my last full block of medical school.
I’m finishing off with a med block and my first rotation is in cardiology. I managed to get the team with an AT for the registrar, which has been really interesting as they have a much greater capacity for making decisions which is really interesting to see. They are also really into teaching and also asking lots of questions... but honestly its been really educational so I’ve been enjoying. Although less enjoyable is me still messing up on bloods and cannulas... but whatever I know I have to learn by doing.
We also found out our internship allocations last week - I managed to get my first preference (not so surprising as I’m pretty sure it was under subscribed). I think over all my cohort did pretty well - most people I know got their first pref, although as always there are a few people that end up getting shafted. Even more exciting - a few of my international mates managed to get rural spots, which is amazing cause it means THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A JOB! and they even managed to get it early so they don’t have to stress for the next few months!
Beyond that there’s still a lot of stress and anxiety around for the long case. I managed to get allocated to a decent hospital, although I’m sitting it very late, so basically half my year will know they have passed before I’ve even sat it. But it does give me a little bit more time to prep. All my practices have gone pretty well so far, but its becoming more and more difficult to find good patients - esp as we are fending off the BPTs who are also prepping for their long cases!
Anyway, here are some things I learned in med school these last two weeks:
1. The risk of having a pulmonary embolus in the 3 months after having a negative D-dimer is 1.5%
2. Our epidermis is self-cleaning... so showers are actually obsolete
3. One of the risk factors for Hodgkin's lymphoma is being from a higher SES
