“If history is not done right the first time around, history will repeat itself.”

Disease blackens the realms. Druids are persecuted, Aos Si hide away in their hills, and history has been rewritten into lies. The lady of the lake’s sword is in the hands of a wrongfully chosen king, unbalancing the forces of life and death. Only when a new chosen takes the sword back can the land be healed, but it will take a quest across Elsewhere to do it. 

In a twist on King Arthur and Irish mythology, Ronan Glenwood must face the horrors she’s been sheltered from and let go of her doubts if she is to save the realm from itself. 

A vengeful druid with too much faith in destiny. A spy who’s given up on his court. A king with a two-hundred year debt to death. And Ronan, desperate for a cause worth dying for.

Day 13: Whims and Wishes

Genre: high fantasy

What first piqued my interest: So clearly, the mood board is gorgeous. And I think all blurbs should start with, “What if the sword chose the wrong king?”.

What I want to learn more about: The blurb raises lots of interesting questions: How did the wrong person end up with the lady of the lake’s sword? Who exactly is Ronan, and why does she decide to try to save the world? How will the “new chosen” take the sword back?

What I’m excited about: I love the idea of a twist on the fated king scenario! I’m not super familiar with the King Arthur story, but I know enough to be curious about a retelling and how the various characters and conflicts might play out. Also, I read this except, and I’m VERY interested in learning more about what’s going on there…

Chapter Twenty Eight Snippet

↳ The Battle of The Termondd

Ronan ran from the beast until a body crashed against hers. They both collapsed in the ferns, and once upon her elbows she saw it was Fig. They lay there, still, gasping for breath, staring at each other. This short reprieve from battle lasted two hundred years. It lasted a millennia. It fleeted.

His dark hair brushed his brows, which pinched with concern or doubt or both. Rainwater made his cheeks shine, and there was a small dent in his skin, right at the crest of his cheekbone. Ronan had resisted the urge to stare at him since they had reunited. She feared this new, older Fig could overwrite her memory of her childhood Fig. But they were once and the same, of course. 

She must look a mess, long hair knotted like a crow's nest. When they first reunited by the lake, she had the disposition of a newborn fawn and she knew it. Since, she had grown, gotten her legs under her, catapulted into the unknown and despite being utterly unprepared every step of the way, Ronan felt steady. Strong. The beast’s feet pounded louder, closer.

They balanced on the precipice of separation again. Fig gazed at her from under his eyelashes, his jaw clenching...  His gaze pinned her, held her together, and if he turned away she would suffocate. 

And he did.

And she did.

They fled away to fight each their own battles, alone.
