Oh oh, how about top 5 queer characters in Mahabharata? Or all of Hindu mythology if you wish, but preferably Mbh! 😁 It doesn't have to be something like "canonically queer", just your interpretation will do!
1. The wives of Dilipa, who lay with each other to create an heir after he died and left them childless. Their son, Bhagiratha, would grow up to become a great hero who brought the river Ganga to earth through his penances, and was the ancestor of Rama. I’ve written a brief ficlet about them here, but really want to write more about them at some point!
2. Brihannala -- I really love how Arjuna’s year in disguise gives him a new insight into his relationship with Draupadi, and also his relationship with his student Uttara!
3. Iravan, because the injustice of how he’s mostly ignored by his father, and then expected to die in the war -- just like Ghatotkacha.
4. Mohini -- IDK too much about her, but I love how a genderfluid person is instrumental in the war between the devas and the asuras (IIRC?)
5. Amba/Shikandhi -- because I love how Amba’s rage is given so much narrative weight and becomes one of the driving forces for the war.
