Media Language Essay

"An Analysis and Comparison of the Use of Sound and Performance in Two Sequences from Call Me By Your Name (2017, Luca Guadagnino) and WALL.E (2008, Andrew Stanton)"

whilst planning my media language essay I naturally did lots of research into the different areas that I was looking into surrounding the films I had chosen. I chose 2 entirely different films because I wanted to demonstrate how even though they do it in very different ways, they both have an impactful use of sound and performance.

something interesting I found out was that Timothee Chalamet was listening to the song that plays over the sequence I was analysing as it was being filmed, so in my essay I will consider the impact that this may have had on the performance.

I also hope to analyse the lyrics of Visions of Gideon somewhat, as I know there is a biblical reference within the song that mirrors the narrative of the movie.

something I think it is important I consider when analysing WALL.E is the involvement of Ben Burtt, who created the voices of EVE and WALL.E, but also previously worked on the Star Wars films, designing the voice of R2D2, who's iconic beeping language is strangely emotional for a robot; the same could be said about WALL.E and EVE's voices.

Media Language Research Task: Michael Goi

Michael Goi is a cinematographer most widely recognised from his work alongside Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk on shows such as American Horror Story, Scream Queens, Glee and the new Netflix original Ratched. There is a clear Modus Operandi to his work, as his cinematography is recognisable across the different shows

one recognisable aspect of his work is his use of wide angle and fish eye lenses. the effect of this is that the setting of the shot is made more prominent; which can be used to emphasise the background or to add gravity to the action of a scene - it can make a character seem small in comparison to their surroundings, thus making the situation appear more daunting. this is effective in shows such as American Horror Story, pictured above, because many of the situations are tense or unsettling.

another prominent technique the film maker uses is creating symmetry within a shot. as you can see in the image above, the room and characters are arranged in a way that is meticulously balanced; from the windows, to the lamp and the arrangement of pictures on the wall, everything is arranged symmetrically. this makes a situation feel very structured and rigid, therefore is us useful in creating a sense of discomfort for the audience. additionally, you can see there is a clear influence from the iconic film maker Stanley Kubrick, who's use of symmetry in The Shining (1980) is one of the key techniques that makes the film as unnerving as it is.

another technique Goi often uses is a a birds eye shot. throughout American Horror Story this method is used frequently to make a character, usually the protagonist, seem vulnerable and helpless. with the camera towering over them it can emphasise their inferiority or weakness, and gives the audience the opportunity to see the character from the antagonists perspective.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS

Technical Codes

1. The camera panned to Bella’s hands, meaning that she is missing Denis. A feeling of hopelessness is then portrayed as she clenched her fists.

2. The camera focused on Bella in a wide shot with a low exposure to portray a feeling of sadness.

Symbolic Codes

1. Messy room and disheveled appearance mean that the person cannot function properly because of a heartbreak.

2. A girl is close to insanity and craziness which shows of her mourning.  

3. Someone is swaying from side to side means he or she is drunk.

Technical Convention

Most Filipino movies last 1.5 - 2 hours of screen time.

Genre Convection

Most romantic Filipino films focus on the heartbreak of a person. 

MEDIA REPRESENTATION

1. In most Filipino movies, there is always a gay best friend of someone and a mistress.  

2. The boyfriend of the main girl has to be handsome. ALWAYS.

3. If you are the main girl but you have not passed to society’s standard of beauty, you will not get a significant other for the film.

4. If someone got into an accident, help will always be late to add drama.

Prediction of "electronic independence." Electronic media replaces aural/oral culture.

"Tribal base" in society.

Technology will shape the world and the minds of people so that they work in a way that moves from individualism.

The lives of people will revolve around technology with television and computers being the means of interaction and thought.

Digital revolution. (Predicted the world wide web.

Understanding Media

How people use new media. In the modern world,"we live mythically and integrally... but continue to think in the old, fragmented space and time patterns of the pre-electric age."

Media itself , as opposed to its content, should be the focus of study.

The message delivered by the medium affecting society is delivered by the characteristics of the media.

In conclusion, it does not matter what is shown on the television, the mere object will affect society in the same way.

Hot and Cool Media

Different medi invites different degrees of participation from the consumer.

Hot - enhances one single sense.

Cool - Requires more effort on the part of the viewer to determine meaning.

Hot = Complete involvement without considerable stimulus. Usually sequential, linear and logical. (Radio, Film, Lecture, Photography.)

Cool = Little involvement with substantial stimulus. More active participation and perception of abstract pattering. (television, seminar, cartoons.)

Global Village

Understanding of cultural implications. 

Acoustic Space - holistic, qualitative, geometric model (sphere with the center being everywhere.) Multi sensory.

Visual Space - Linear, qualitative order, complex intricate paradoxical topology.
