Summary: Increased heart rate and constant blushing are signs of infatuation. Toris knows that, and when he links these symptoms with his best friend Feliks, he realizes what he must do. And that starts with asking his roommate for ideas.
Note: I'm really sorry this is so late! uwu Lots of things came up in my life and I wasn't able to focus on this. I really hope you had a nice Valentine's Day!
Two college roommates sit across from each other, each on his respective bed. It is late evening now and the shorter of the two sits cross-legged with his hands gripping the blanket wrapped around his body. The other, with apprehensive, yet excited features etched into his face, has his hands in the leather jacket that he always wears. His glasses give off a glare and his eyes are obscured, but his companion can tell that he is impatient. “Well, are you going to tell me or what? I don’t have all-” “I…I think I love him, Alfred.” A tense silence fills their dormitory. The blonde stares, wide eyed and mouth hanging open. Toris moans before putting his face into his hands and then down to his lap, pushing his rapidly reddening face into the soft fleece blanket. A blast of winter air slips in through the open window and chills his neck as the blanket slips from his shoulders. He knew that he shouldn’t have told him! But then Alfred starts laughing loudly. Removing a fist from his jacket pocket, Alfred pats Toris’ now exposed back. The Lithuanian flinches a little and lifts his head to face his friend. “Geez, you really had me worried! I thought you were going to tell me a really deep secret or something! Your face was really too priceless when you told me.” “Al...” Toris starts, crossing both arms around his stomach in an effort to stay warm. But as the American continues to slap his leg in an attempt to quell the relieved laughter, Toris repeats it, slightly louder, “Alfred please, this is really important! I don’t know who else to ask.” he adds as to not sound too harsh. After all he was asking him for a favor. “Aww, but my Toris is all grown up! Wants to start dating him of all people~” “Al, do remember that I am older than you! And you really are one to talk,” Toris continues, still blushing, “After all, you yourself have that English boyfriend you keep talking about. Arthur, was it?” Alfred hums triumphantly, nodding in agreement and continuing, “Yeah, I can tell you all about how we got together if that would help! Well it all started when Arthur and I met at-“ “No, no, no wait I don’t want to hear your whole story.” Toris interrupts exasperatedly. “Just give me some advice, please.” ---------------------- To be honest, Toris wasn’t too sure that Alfred’s help did much good. The next morning, he had wanted to bolt out the door before Alfred could question, and had lied to him saying that Toris was fine. He even denied his offer to drive him to school and firmly insisted on taking the bus. When he was questioned about his decision, he simply told him that he wanted to get to school early that day. So out Toris went, trudging through the cold, stooped over and tugging at his hood to cover his face from snow. He probably should have gotten a ride in Alfred’s car, especially on days like this when the snow seems to slip down his hood. His real intention for going out earlier, not only as a means of escape from Alfred, was so that he could get his “friend” Feliks something. They had a really deep friendship ever since they had met at college last semester. When their class had been learning about Eastern European history, Feliks had been the first to speak up, and he seemed to know everything about Polish history. When he was questioned about it, Feliks responded with the most smug attitude, that he was just knowledgeable about his home country. Toris and Feliks discussed it, and had accidentally let it slip that he was Lithuanian. Feliks was ecstatic. “Oooh, you’re Lithuanian?! That’s, like, totally cool! I’m Polish myself, so I bet we’ll be really good friends!” That was also around when Feliks had make up that endearing, at least to Toris, nickname that he always calls him. “So you know that Lithuania in Lithuanian is ‘Lietuva’, right? What if I call you Liet?” As Toris continues to walk through the snow, he considers his relationship with Feliks. He is not really sure if he could really consider Feliks a bestie. Maybe he was…more to him than that. These past few weeks, Toris had been feeling strange symptoms whenever he was around Feliks. Increased heart rate and blushing included. Now, Toris isn’t dense. He knows that these are signs of infatuation. But he was not sure if he was ready to commit to this. To actually be able to admit to himself that he has a crush on his Polish friend. He shakes his head, as if to stop himself from thinking these things. Right now, he has to focus on the matter at hand, and that is to find a present for Feliks. ------------ Giving gifts is a sort of tradition that they have. It started with when they had met, because Feliks had asked Toris for a pencil in one of their classes and then had given him something in return. Toris had then given him something as a “thank-you for the thank-you” gift and this had been happening ever since. Last time Feliks had treated him out to lunch. Now it is Toris’ turn and he has decided to get him this (strangely cute) dragon plushie that Feliks had been harping on about for a while. Something about “It’s the latest trend in Poland. You, like, put it next to you before you sleep and it’s supposed to give you a dream of your soul mate.” Not that Toris really pays much attention to what his friend says whenever he started rambling. And he had already known of Feliks’ love for superstitious items. Problem was it is kind of hard to find. After all, it is a trend from Poland. Toris knows that he could probably find it somewhere in New York City, but it would take some time searching the shop that carries it. But after lots of window shopping later, Toris finds what he was looking for displayed in the front of an imported goods shop. Being a poor college student, his eyes naturally were drawn to the price tag. And it read… 200 dollars?! Well, that was typical Feliks. Always going after these kind of expensive items. But 200 dollars for what was essentially a dragon plushie was just ridiculous. Even he could make something better looking than that, with all those hand-stitched patches and cheap plastic eyes. But apparently they had been designed by a famous Polish celebrity, so naturally the price would be hiked up. Toris sighs in sadness as he peeks into his empty wallet and then at Feliks’ gift in his other hand. There probably went his and Alfred’s food money for the next week. Or maybe just Alfred’s. Nevertheless, he now has Feliks’ gift. So all that was left was to wrap it that night and give it to him the next day at school. And to tell him his feelings. ------------ That night, Toris was in a in a state of numb nervousness. As he lay awake in his bed, he thought to himself. Sure, it was easier said than done. He honestly wasn’t even sure if Feliks was interested in men. And then there was that lingering feeling that it was too soon. After all, they had known each other for about half a year, and maybe Feliks wasn’t ready yet. A soft snore from the direction of Alfred’s bed woke him from his reverie and he groaned to himself. As he begins to feel the usual sensation of a stomachache, probably from too much stress, he allows himself to drift off into sleep and think about it the next morning. When he wakes up the next morning, Toris still has the same ache. Even sleeping did not make it go away. What was also still there was the doubt. That Feliks would reject him. What if Feliks got creeped out by Toris’ move and wanted to stop being friends with him? After Alfred and Toris ate breakfast, Alfred had decided to give him a pep talk as they both dressed into their warm winter sweaters. “Now remember, Toris, to always keep eye contact when you are actually saying it. It’ll make it seem more -- what’s the word -- ah! Believable. Even though your nerves may be eating you from the inside, and knowing you, it will, you should still make sure to always look at him.” “Okay.” Toris mumbled in reply as he clutches the gift bag containing Feliks’ gift. He had spent a good half-hour decorating it and writing an appropriate card. Toris is always, in his opinion, pretty lame at writing notes for people. Usually they come out awkward and repetitive but, for the first time, Toris feels pretty confident about this one. After reassuring his blonde roommate that he is fine, and he actually did feel a little better this time, Alfred ceases his pep talk and leads Toris to his car and swiftly asks him about what had happened to their food money. Crap… ------------ Once Alfred drops off Toris in front of the building, he looks fearfully at the gift in his right hand and tries to compose himself before entering the building. Relax, Toris. Everything’s going to turn out alright. Feliks wouldn’t judge you. …Right? And if he does, then- “Hey Liet! I missed you!” As Toris hears someone call out that nickname, he whips around, already knowing who is running towards him. He gasps and loses his footing a little as Feliks practically jumps into him, wrapping his gloved hands around Toris. “Hi Feliks,” Toris mumbles softly and then, once he feels that Feliks is satisfied, pries the smaller one off himself. “The last time I saw you was two days ago.” “Yeah, but two days is totally too long! Well it was nice not having to go to school I guess.” Toris hoists his backpack back up his shoulder and swings Feliks’ present around. “What’s that?” Feliks gestures towards the gift bag that Toris was holding. “Uhh…” Dammit his plans…! “It’s for a professor.” He says shortly, obscuring it from view. “Really?” Feliks raises a shaped eyebrow. Toris gulped. He can tell by his tone of voice that Feliks was not convinced, but thankfully he drops the subject. “So, we should, like, get going before we’re late.” “Oh, right!” ------------ Classes are as boring as ever. All the other students and the teachers seem to be as animated as the dragon plushie that sat in Feliks’ gift bag. Also, speaking of that present… Feliks seems to be watching it every class period that they have together. As if he is trying to figure out which teacher it belongs to. Toris feels a bit pressured to give it to him at lunch but decides against it, wanting to follow through with his original plans. Toris has to deal with Feliks’ scrutinizing eye until classes are over. And then he makes his move. “So, Feliks?” “Mmhmm?” he replies, busy texting someone. “Uhh, youwanttogowithmeto-” “Wait, wait, WAIT! You’re, like, speaking way too fast!” Feliks grins a little, dropping his phone into his bag and continuing, “Geez, what’s into you today?” “Okay, I’m sorry,” Toris returns the smile and starts over, “Would you like to go to out with me to get a snack or something?” Feliks turns his head away as though he was trying to hide something and then suddenly back at Toris, beaming. “Sure, that sounds great.” ------------ So after they stopped at Toris’ locker, they left, going through the snow to a local bakery. Toris had decided against giving Feliks his present at such a public place, so after they finished eating their sugary pastries, Toris had led him to a nearby park. Since it was so snowy and cold out that day, there was virtually no one around. “Liet, why are we, like, going to the park?” Feliks questioned as he took special care to not get his new boots ruined by the snow. “Because I have to tell you something.” “Ok…” Toris could tell Feliks was already suspicious of him. After all, he had told him that he was going to give the gift bag to a teacher and here he was carrying it. But now Toris had led both of them into a near-deserted park with nothing but this present. “Hey Feliks,” he started, and heard the shorter blonde turn at the mention of his name, “would you mind clearing a bench?” “Totally.” he responds. Feliks, with his back turned, starts to swipe the snow away. Toris watches the powder cascade off the side of the bench and in a sudden erratic movement grabs a handful of it and hurls it at Feliks. He staggers backwards and stops, standing still. Oh no, did he not appreciate that? This whole thing was a mistake, he would probably get mad that he ruined his clothes or something…besides he hadn’t thought this through, it wasn’t in his original plans… “HA!” Toris realizes a little too late the flying snowball coming in his direction and flails his arms in front of him as an attempt to stop the incoming projectile. The snowball collides with his left hand and is sent into a nearby tree. With wide eyes, Toris looks at his hands as Feliks bursts out laughing nearby the bench. “You, like, totally looked funny!” he manages before snickering. Toris joins in, relieved that Feliks did not take his gesture the wrong way. Before long, they clear away all the excess snow on the bench and sit themselves down, already exhausted from marching through the snow. Then an awkward silence ensues. Toris chastises himself for not knowing of what to say, but something in him prevented him from doing so. “Well, what did you have to, like, tell me?” “Feliks…” Toris starts feebly. Ok here goes nothing… “Feliks,” he repeats louder. “I think...” Oh no he feels his face growing warmer against the contrast from the cold air. He then whispered something inaudible. “What? I totes couldn’t hear you for a second.” “I....I...” “Well, what is it?” Feliks sits up in curiosity and hovers over Toris who has shut his eyes in concentration. “Aaaah I can’t do this!” Toris reopened his eyes and in a hasty effort to explain himself, “Wait, I wasn’t supposed to say that!” Feliks laughs a little before helping his flustered friend. “Liet,” he said, seriousness enveloping all the features on his face, “Whatever you say, it’s ok. I bet it isn’t even bad. So, like, just say what you have to say.” But his face was flushed. He has an inkling as to what Toris is about to say. “Thanks.” Toris brightened up and continued. “Feliks, I know we have been friends for only a short while...” He drifts off before remembering Alfred’s advice and stares into Feliks’ green eyes. “But during these past six months, I have been able to befriend one of the most beautiful, amazing, people ever. And that person has me entranced. I can’t help but get a strange nervous-excitement whenever I’m around you.” Toris leans closer to Feliks and grasps his hand, “That’s why; I’m asking you, if…if you would let me fall in love with you. Do you want to go out with me?” At this point both of them were red with embarrassment before Feliks gave a toothy grin and gripped his hand tighter, “Liet, that was, like, totally cheesy.” “Wh-what?” Toris stuttered. He still couldn’t believe he did it. But now that Feliks mentioned it, he couldn’t help but notice that it did sound like it came word for word from a romance novel. He colors even more and splutters, “S-so, what’ll it be?” Feliks’ smile widens even more. “Oh, Liet! Totes yes!” And he wraps his arms around Toris. They both start to giggle as they embrace in the cold, part out of sheer enthusiasm for beginning a new part in their relationship but also because of the awkwardness. “Wait. I almost forgot.” Toris releases Feliks and bends over to grab the present. “This is for you.” “Really? Thanks!” Feliks reached out for it and opened the card with trembling hands. Toris waited in anticipation as Feliks’ eyes moved across his penmanship. Once he got to the end, his eyes lit up and he replaces the card inside the bag and pulled out the lump that was wrapped in tissue paper. Carefully removing each sheet of it, Feliks uncovered the stuffed dragon. “Oh my god! You totally didn’t have to get me anything! But this is...this is the dragon that I’ve been obsessed about.” Feliks shuddered. “Lieeeet. You just wasted $200 on meee.” And then he sneezed. “Oh no, I can’t have you getting sick.” Toris beams and takes Feliks’ hand and starts to lead him out of the park. “Have sweet dreams.” He smiled down at the blonde, who had moved in closer to Toris and grabbed his forearm. “Yeah, dreams about you.” Feliks buries his face into Toris’ winter coat. And at that moment Toris is sure that he has already fallen in love with Feliks. Dear Feliks, By the time you are reading this letter, I probably have already told you my feelings. I just wanted to tell you know that even if you say ‘no’, we will still be the best friends ever. If you said ‘yes’, then let us open up a new part of our lives together. Let us fall in love together. Love, Liet
