Holidays , Media Creations
I believe that holidays were created by the media and that society commemorates them just because it is a break from school/work.
Let's take Easter for example, what is the traditional custom when it comes to this holiday ? Gather family around ? Attend church on Sunday ? Paint eggs for egg hunts ? Run around with bunny suit on ? Does anyone know the significance of Easter hunts ? Where did this bunny come from ? Does anyone stop to say " Why am I celebrating this holiday " ? Well , I believe Easter should not be a holiday because very few people know the real meaning behind it AND I am one of the few.
Another holiday is Halloween. Like Easter, Halloween is celebrated by people who have no clue what the meaning behind it is. Halloween is known for people dressing in costumes and going door to door asking for candy. Depending on what costume you wear, you will attract good/bad attention to you. Some people even get arrested on this day. What is the point of this holiday is what I am asking ? Little do people know that this is a pagan holiday. Does all this sound like Halloween should be considered a holiday ?
Christmas is starting to become advertised as early as September. Why is that ? Are the trees, decorations, presents, stockings, carols, Christmas dinners, and giving to charity for ONE day really necessary ? Remember all this comes with headaches, stress and even so a huge credit card bill afterwards. This holiday is just another excuse to get family together at least once a year, but that is not the case. It is a waste because society urges people in a way to follow the norm but no one really knows the whole purpose behind Christmas.
The word holiday really means " holy day ", reserved for special religious days. Now, the word holiday means going on vacation or taking a break from school/work.
