Blog 6: Gender and music videos (Wk 39, due 12am, Tuesday 29 September)
Select THREE music videos, and link to or embed these in your blog. Explain your selection (how are your videos related?) and conduct a comparative analysis of these in terms of gender performance.

In this first music video, I chose this because it is an easy choice for the discrimination of woman, and portraying them as objects and slaves. For example all the rappers are treated as royalty covered in these girls only wearing bikinis and dancing around them while they sit or stand above the rest of them. Further into the video it shows these woman managing caring for the marijuana implying that these rappers have countless girls they can choose from whenever they want. Even the lyrics themselves talk about how they have different woman and can have their way with them, while their physical actions imply they have the woman do everything for them and treat them as if they’re kings.

This video is a lot more interesting than the first as it being held in a church. While everyone seems very formal at the beginning, the woman are still sexualized as the young attractive ones still have short dresses on, whilst partying on their way to the funeral, this is interesting though as they aren’t mourning the death they’re celebrating life, so while this is a serious event that has happened, they’re still partying together. While the woman do play a sexual role they aren’t being degraded like the first video where they’re objects to the rapper. In this video they are friends, family, wives to all the males in this video. One noticeable trait in this video is that is shows a few parents and elderly who are dressed appropriately, I feel as though that both genders are equally represented in this video.

With a female rapper as my third choice, this music video, has woman still sexualized but in less of an inappropriate way compared to the first video. This video shows more of a woman’s independence view however as Jennifer Hudson is the chief of police, and all the guards in the prison are females while all the males are tattooed and in the prison. However the woman are still watching the males working out, this still has the sexual marketing in it as the other videos do. This video shows the woman in more of a dominant role as Iggy Azalea gets away with the bank robbery, but also shows that she is also influenced by the male’s bad behaviour and breaks him out of jail. All of the woman in this video are generally young and attractive.
These three videos are all rap videos, whilst also three different types of rappers, this is why I chose this genre was because of the diversity, from these three videos, you can see that woman are sexualized in rap regardless of what the song is about, while the males generally are ‘criminals’ with tattoos and enjoy to party whilst being heavily desired by these woman. While this may be genre specific there is a clear difference between these videos, whilst they are all very similar regardless of the story being told
