This @transworldskate cover photo of @jamiethomas that I shot in 2000 was taken in direct response to the realization that the mainstream non-skate media was barging in on the traditional print skate publications. More and more, we, the skate mag photographers were feeling pushed aside by TV sports networks and their deep pockets and the big advertising budgets that they attracted. @daveswift01 came up with this idea of getting all of our friends with multiple cameras to shoot Jamie Thomas Smithing this San Diego handrail and poking fun tongue in cheek at the Media Overkill aspect of it all. Back in 2000, we would have never in our wildest dreams imagined that Skateboarding would be where it is today, popular as ever but, skate companies doing not so good, print skate magazines passing away, people scrolling through 100s of skate photos in a sitting on their phones, Skateboarding’s debut in the Olympics next year, print advertising evaporating and skate photographers scraping to get by. I am not complaining, times change, it is just an observation and I think this cover shot was an early glimpse into the future...2019.
