In an allonormative society which relegates most forms of physical or emotional closeness only to sexual-romantic relationships with very narrow exceptions for familial ones, medicine when operating at its platonic and asklepion ideal allows a framework for emotional and physical intimacy and the sharing of the body and mind with another person in a structured and definitionally platonic way providing in real life a complicated and emotional avenue for healing and relief and in fiction a completely unique framework from which to build a fantasy of intimacy and closeness that skirts traditional allonormative experience almost entirely, allowing queer and acespec people to engage with and view these concepts through a lens which feels removed from some aspects of normativity that may be unappealing. yet the reality of medicine is often so far from its asklepion ideal that these same exact features can make it a uniquely frightening and upsetting thing to deal with depending on your personal sensitivities and struggles. the soaring fictional pseudokink highs and the crashing real life systematic lows play off each other in such incredibly strong contrast to make medicine of all kinds a subject so ripe for interrogation and analysis and discussion and dissection that it has no real equal. so when I say im tens of thousands words into another think piece about the implications of stripping your body naked and submitting it for examination by someone -
