Tincture of Usnea (illuminated from the side to show light scattering by suspended polysaccharides). Usnea has broad spectrum immune supporting and antiinflammatory properties. I usually take it on a daily basis when i am working with a lot of people with viral illnesses, like at this time of the year. . . . This particular extract was made by adding the alcohol to the dry usnea, letting it get soaked up for a couple hours, and then adding boiling water and agitating it. The finished product is 5:1 and about 30% alcohol. After straining the liquid and squeezing/wringing out the solid part, there’s very little left behind. . . . Usnea is something you shouldn’t harvest unless you have a good understanding for the particular stand it is growing in and the ecology around it. It’s selective in its habitat in some parts of its range, and can be slow growing. @tha_microphone_fiend mixin' up the medicine. This is a wintergreen and comfrey salve, another house specialty of the first aid tent. It is made by cooking comfrey leaves in oil, then removing them and adding beeswax and oil of wintergreen. This is Roan with his very special herbal box.  I made this up just for him and his Mom for a craft project.  He has all parts of a plant from root to seed....that includes leaf, flower, bark, root, and the seeds as I mentioned. Plus some olive oil so he can make an  oil infusion.  There is also some beeswax and cacao butter for experimentation in making a herbal salve.
