Put them all in a row (but then realized how inconsistent my skeleton style is 😅… ah the vagaries of using different reference photos). But seeing them all in a row makes me excited to keep going. (Though I think I will continue going backwards in the order of woodblocks and do the Musicians next - thinking of doing the ghouls for those…)
Spook Of The Day #126 • A medieval haunting takes place in Iceland
This tale takes us back to the 13th century.
Thorgunna rocked up to Iceland one day, and stayed with a woman named Thuirda. To earn her keep, she became a servant to her. However, she doesn’t perform this role very long when she dies. But just before she takes her final breathe, she tells her roommate “burn my bedding and give the rest of my stuff to the local monks or like evil will come k”.
Thuirda is a bad roommate.
She takes the bedding for herself, and unleashed hell upon her neighbours. Accidents, unexplained attacks, illnesses, and worst of all, a group of ghouls that hang around the main hall.
To clear the area of the evil, a trial lead by a priest banishes them from the area.
Love a ghost story, even the ones from *does maths* uhhh 700 years ago? Follow this blog to see a new ghost story everyday and/or maths.
Venturing now into the 15th century, here is the “Cardinal and King” from Guyot Marchant 1485 illustrations of the Dance Macabre (included as the second image). There are a whole series of woodblocks so may end up doing a couple more with other Ghost cast… I’m gonna say that mine is also “woodblock” style lol bc I wasn’t much up for any sort of rendering.
Ok, so this maxed out my procreate canvas, so the next ones will need to start their own conga line, but here is what we get based on the first three 1485 Guyot Marchant Dance Macabre woodblocks (minus the primary authority page - which I will eventually do with Toblerone Fudge). For some reason the ghouls look more saturated to me…but I think I’m ok with that…
Next up in the Dance Macabre series is done: “Four Musicians”. I based the clothes on a 15th century Italian fresco called Allegory of April. I don’t really know the ghouls enough to based these after any one particular ghoul, but tried to make the drummer the tallest (i.e. Mountain-esque) and made sure the female ghoul had the piano organ (i.e. medieval keytar).
The next Dance Macabre installment, based on the Pope and Emperor. (I’m going to continue the 1485 woodblock inspired series because it’s a lot of fun.)
Here, Papa Nihil has a shawm (the closest thing to a medieval sax I could think of), and Sister Imperator is based on a 17th century painting of an abbess.
The blanket arrived from redbubble!! I’m pleasantly surprised with the detail in the printing, but the blanket is not at all warm…😑 so holding out hope the Shutterfly version will actually be blanket-like (bonus inclusion of cat)
