Target gets "a little gritty" with its new Employee Commons

Target opens new downtown 'student union' for employees
Sam Black, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal
Target Corp. this week opened its downtown Minneapolis employee center called Target Plaza Commons. On Tuesday, it offered an inside look at the new Nicollet Mall facility.
Minneapolis-based Target (NYSE: TGT), which calls the 20,000-square-foot space its "student union" for employees, incorporated a fitness center, open meeting areas, and indoor and outdoor settings for employees to gather and play games.
Target isn't saying how much it spent on the project. Previously, the Business Journal reported that it was a $10 million project.
The Nicollet Mall facility is open to Target corporate employees who work at its downtown Minneapolis headquarters, the company's credit services center on Interstate 394 in Minneapolis, and at its Brooklyn Park campus.
Plaza Commons is open Monday through Friday between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The fitness center includes space for yoga, Pilates and other fitness classes taught by MediFit and Steele Fitness.
There's an indoor bicycle storage area that holds about 125 bikes and has two stations for employees to fix and maintain their bikes. There's also a vending machine that sells things like replacement tires.
The outdoor area includes a red basketball court, a large outdoor chess set, bean bag toss on the yard, and a lot of areas for meeting informally.
Food service so far hasn't started in the facility. Bon Appetit Management Co., which manages the company's corporate cafeteria, will be providing a limited menu for employees at the Plaza Commons.
Bon Appetit has applied for a liquor license for beer and wine with the city of Minneapolis so that Target can accommodate internal events there as needed, according to a company spokeswoman.
Target bought the building as a placeholder so it could control the land around the headquarters for the future, said Rich Varda, Target's senior vice president of store design.
"But then as soon as we got it, we said we're not going to just leave it, we're going to do something with it. But it took a while to walk through and gel what it could be," he said.
Target still sees the site as a place where it could eventually expand its office space, but that is eight to 10 years out or more, Varda said, adding, "This facility will be here for quite a while."
Ryan Cos. U.S. Inc., also based in Minneapolis, was the general contractor. Julie Snow Architects, based in Minneapolis, was the lead designer.
"When we took over these [old concrete] buildings, our desire was to do as little as possible to make it a great space," Varda said. "We thought it would be great to sort of reveal that sort of urban — maybe a little bit gritty — aesthetic and carry it out through all the details."
Target tried to incorporate the history of the site into the design, keeping and polishing an old tile mosaic put in the floor by a shoe repair shop and even using part of the sign from Let It Be Records, which had been in the space previously.
