Grocery Store 3: The Mediterranean Way
This weekend I visited The Mediterranean Way, a small specialty store in DuPont Circle. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon so it was rather empty and I browsed the store to myself.
Before I went I expected it to focus more on Italian and Greek Mediterranean foods. I think this is rooted in my own pre-existing biases on what “Mediterranean” means and what types of food represent that. I was happily surprised to see that there was a wide variety of cuisines available. Most products appeared to be imports and had handwritten price tags underneath explaining what the product was. Many labels on the food had writing in Arabic, Greek, and Italian, Turkish and possibly others I didn’t know. Some home-made foods were in the fridge with deli meats, this gave it a much more small-shop feel. There was also a high end olive oil tasting bar and a balsamic vinegar tasting bar.
This store is the most high end I have seen. Prices were quite high, which is probably because they are imports instead of domestic versions.
