in extracellular, viruses are called virion

virion consists of a protein coat, called a capsid,surrounding a nucleic acid core

the nucleic acid and its capsid are also called nucleocapsid, which in many cases can crystallize like crystalline chemicals

some virions have a phospholipid membrane called an envelope surrounding the nucleocapsid

intracellular viruses are still referred to as a virus even though it exists solely as nucleic acid
