Wow! Max really blew his chance here, but it was inevitable given how things were going. He really should have planned this out better, alas...
Okay, I feel like the comment happens in a different part of this hypothetical fic, but can also vaguely correspond to this moment... Also I borrowed Hector and Cleopatra for this, hope you don't mind, Medea!
Thanks for the ask!
Snippet below:
“Hector!”
He turns at the sound of Maximinius’ voice.
Hector pauses and waits for his friend to jog over and continuing down the street with Maximinius at his side.
They’d agreed to meet at the university library to study together, but he’s glad to see him sooner. From the urgency in Maximinius’ voice, Hector thought he had something to say, but after his initial greeting, Maximinius takes up his signature silence, Hector figures that his friend must have just been trying to get his attention for a while.
He has been distracted quite a lot to day.
Hector looks over at the dark-haired man and finds Maximinius tugging at the cuffs of his sleeves.
He frowns. “What’s wrong?” Hector asks. His best friend is not ones for nerves.
Maximinius inhales then exhales. Hector is starting to worry.
What could be bothering his friend so?
“Hector,” he says slowly as if testing each syllable on his tongue. “Would you do me the honor of going out with me?”
Hector blinks.
What—
“Maximinius!” Another voice cuts into his thoughts.
A flurry of blond curls and white and blue print snowflake invade his vision.
Maximinius is much taller than Gloriam Snow, but she’s practically scaling up him as she clings to his arm, her coat blanketing both of them.
A few passersby eye them, and Gloriam straightens herself out from being practically draped over Hector’s friend, but she doesn’t
Hector understands now.
“Of course, I’ll go out with you,” he says, without any hesitation. He ignores Gloriam’s gasp completely.
The three of them are getting more looks, and Hector swears that he hears someone snicker.
“It’s a date,” he adds with a wink to Maximinius.
Gloriam’s hands release Hector’s friend’s arm as if she’s been burnt.
An odd sound escapes the back of her throat before she squeezes out an “excuse me” before scurrying away from them. Hector holds in his laugh until she disappears from view after turning a corner.
“Well, that got her off your back!” Hector says with a smile, clapping Maximinius on the back and resuming their walk to the library.
“Let me know if you need me to pretend again.”
“Pretend,” Maximinius repeats.
“Yes,” Hector responds. “I don’t mind! I’m not exactly Gloriam Snow’s biggest fan either. Anyway, I have to introduce you to Cleopatra. I asked her to meet us at the library!”
Hector checks his watch.
“She should be there right now. C’mon, we can’t keep her waiting.”
Hector can’t fight the grin on his face. He’s been waiting for this all day.
He hopes that she and Maximinius get along. He can’t think of any reason why they shouldn’t.
I saw an earlier post about Felix poisoning President Ravinstill and it somehow making things even worse.
Tentatively, I'd like to slide forward this suggestion: Felix as President. Or at least as a presidential candidate.
Except he's doing everything to slide the votes to literally anyone else. (It's not working) EVERYTHING he does to make his odds worse comically backfires and ends up endearing him even more to the citizens.
Coriolanus is fuming. None of his poison attempts are working. (Unbeknownst to him, anything poisoned ends up with Clemmie and she has no idea it's poisoned either, so she's going about her day, unbothered by the poison that she's just consumed)
Wow! This is great! It weaponizes my tendency to torture Felix for good (he gets to fail upwards)!
I just spitballed a few ideas below... Just the idea of Felix failing upward is so funny!
Hilarius and Festus fully expecting either Coriolanus or Felix's cousin to win the presidency decide to jokingly write him in as a candidate during the primaries. A lot of their former classmates decide to do this as well, because why not?
There are now three top candidates for the President of Panem.
The only other person who hates the idea of Felix becoming president in this AU more than Felix is President Ravinstill who fears that the office will take away the best parts of his nephew.
He suggest that Felix announce that any supporters he has instead vote for Felix's cousin, Marius. There's a press conference and Felix does so,
Their combined Ravinstill "luck" means that Marius sees the press conference, bursts into tears, and announces that he is actually stepping down to support his "baby cousin" whom he would now like to get to know better.
Marius and Felix's other cousin, Gnaeus, sign on as Felix's advisors and their supporters are quick to back Felix
All over the Capitol, men and women are touched by this display of familial support and maybe decide to vote Ravinstill for that reason.
(I don't think the Districts are allowed to vote for the president if we're being honest here... or maybe certain Capitolites sway those votes. Like maybe the Creeds offer food and other benefits if their candidate wins, so it incentives District 7 to vote a certain direction?)
In an effort to lose support, Felix declares that he's stopping the Hunger Games, because he hates fun (hoping to lose the younger demographic of voters who have grown up with them and love the Games). He states it was a big mistake of his Great-Uncle's administration (he's hoping to lose the traditionalist/older Ravinstill supporters.)
This starts a movement of anti-Game Capitolites who start framing the Games as childish which somehow gains a lot of traction.
His second statement actually sparks self-reflection through a sheer miracle, and older Capitolites start going "they are kind of barbaric, aren't they?"
Pres. Ravinstill would be more upset about how badly their plan to not get Felix elected is going (and also his nephew lowkey throwing shade at his administration) if Gaul five seconds away from throttling him at any given moment.
Coriolanus loses support as he built up his popularity on his Gamemaking experience
Clemensia's been getting a lot of treats lately because she's been helping Felix straighten out an ending the Games plan since it looks like he'll win.
If the Districts can vote, they definitely vote for Felix now that there is a potential end to the Games on the table.
"Here, Clemmie! You've been such a great help! Have some tea! And sweets!"
"But you haven't had any?
"I'll have some right after I go into the other room and read this live on TV!"
"Felix, this says that District 13 is actually not destroyed, and that the government lied to everyone in order to end the war faster, leaving many in financial ruin?"
"Yup. Everyone will hate this!"
*the next day*
Headline: District 13 Wishes to Rejoin Panem Due to the Bravery and Candor of Its Young Future President
Coriolanus rips the paper.
Thanks for sending this idea! Always happy to see Felix ideas!
Getting to know you through the fandom has been really fun! And I adore your world-building and ravinstill ocs.
I think this might be my first foray into being very active in participating in a fandom and definitely have you and the corso creatures to thank for it 💜
Like the geriatric ward drama wouldn't have been the same. Gloriam and her hateful passion with Volumnia, or even the toxic besties with whatever they've gotten up to this time around...
(Nor would I ever been brave enough to come up with Hector & Cleopatra haha - thank you for letting me bounce wild ideas off of you! )
Thank you, Medea! :)
I am again glad people are liking the worldbuilding and Ravinstill OCs! I've been somewhat active in fandom before, but as I've mentioned a couple times, this is the most active a fandom that I've been in has been, so it's certainly a new experience for me too! And of course, my experience wouldn't be the same without you and the other Creatures as well!
Oh, the Geriatric Ward of Panem... Where would we be without you! I love rolling of you and the rest of the Corso Creatures' ideas and I'm glad that you guys do the same for me! Truly, Gloriam/Volumnia started as joke, but as we all know, it's certainly more than a joke now. It's our new reality lol!
Omg, I'm so honored to have helped you get to coming up with Hector and Cleopatra! They are so wonderful! I love them! I'm still working on that drawing I mentioned that I might do that has Hector in it btw lol
okay so your last comment about "Ravinstill torture nexus" and whether Hector was part of the rebels got me thinking....
(help, I'm falling into the abyss that is the Ravinstill torture nexus...ahhh)
I want to say Hector wouldn't sign off on the arena bombing, especially since Clemensia gets put at risk as well. And he doesn't seem to mind Felix and her remaining friends.
BUT in an universe that he does... I feel like he'd have to be provoked into it. Like maybe he learns about the real reason behind Clemensia's hospital stay.
Hector can be impulsive, especially when angry. Does he regret it once his anger has cooled and he sees the aftermath of the arena explosion? Maybe? It might depend whether Clemensia is still alive/scarred for life. Or maybe he's all "an eye for an eye" in this scenario 🤔
Ravinstill torture nexus!
Sorry, it took me a second to get to this, I was waiting for myself to be mentally awake lol. Anyway, thanks for sending this in an ask! I'm not 100% if you wanted my thoughts, but I suppose you'll be getting my two cents. (Obligatory Hector's your OC, I'm just speculating here lol)
Yeah, I don't think that Hector would sign off on the bombing. Even with the impulsivity (although maybe you could see it?), I think there would probably have to be maybe a downplaying of the danger to kids to get him to agree (what do you think?) Maybe, at his angriest, he thinks that there will be enough time for an evacuation (and the roof won't just collapse like that... I guess since all the Arena is used for is the Games, maybe the Capitol didn't bother to repair structural damage.)
Also even if Hector doesn't sign off on it, I think just by association (if the bombing is the work of a group of rebels, or if Volumnia is somehow behind it and has gone over Max's head somehow... idk if she'd do this in my interpretation but laying out all the options), this could add some anger on Max's side of the equation.
Also idk, I feel like the bombing had to be in the works for a bit, but theoretically, Clemmie is in the hospital during that time (assuming of course Gaul still hospitalizes Clemmie) so... even if logistically it might not make sense (although idk maybe the Rebels work fast), Max might find it suspicious that after Clemmie's attack and she's hospitalized, all the other mentors are in a bombing...
But yeah, Hector doesn't seem to have a problem with Felix, and given his and Clemmie's friendship, I don't think he'd go that route (unless other drastic things could happen this AU?)
But it is interesting to think about to me, because it gives Max a clear point where he can see Hector as having "betrayed" him. Like, even after their falling out, I think Max can see the cut contact as Hector being Hector. That's his principles, he doesn't see what Max needs to do. Actively trying to organize people to not support the Games is within Hector's rights (even if Max/Volumnia might try to silence other people doing that), but Hector potentially being implicated in the bombing? even if it's not true or because he was misled? Hmmmm, fun for me... Because I think the affection lingers, but I think for Max it would destroy literally any thoughts of a reconciliation (whatever buried hope there might be...)
Also I just like killing Felix, but I suppose he doesn't have to die for all this to happen... Like Max would still be upset at just the threat on his life I think... Also it was my personal hc that in canon, the Capitol were over confidant and letting potential Rebels run around in the hopes of finding more and this backfired with the bombing which is why they don't publicize the Bombing more. It makes them look bad, and if people look closer, it could make them look worse. BUT with the Hector wrench thrown in, Max gets to blame himself a bit more, because he probably was willful ignorance is also largely due to Hector probably!
Damn, I wrote a lot... Anyway, thanks for the ask and entertaining the Ravinstill torture nexus!
Don't Lose Your Head is my Max dies before Gaul AU attempt! Technically, I think I am done with the first draft (it's only around 1K words), but it's in need of a major overhaul as it's kind of all over the place. I'm letting it sit until I can look at it with fresh eyes.
Gaul's basically very confused about emotions. There's a dead body getting used as a prop, and for once, it isn't Felix! Yay! It is Max though, so still a Ravinstill. Coriolanus is also there of course. There isn't too much else to this fic without just telling you the fic lol!
not sure if this it's only for tbosas fics, but if not - can I ask for one for From Water to Wine?
TBOSAS-wise, haha you know how I am about Clemmie... From Canis Canem Edit, I was wondering about Festus - if made to choose between Coriolanus and her, who would he pick? Or would he not pick one friend to back over the other?
ask game
I can do both! I'll do the tbosas section first since this is my tbosas blog (I technically have a hotd blog but I never use it).
Okay, the tbosas section got long, and then the hotd section is getting really long (I'm still writing it), so I will just make that a separate post and @ you.
Canis Canem Edit (Clemmie)
I think it's very telling that Festus hasn't picked a side for most of their years in University. To be fair, Clemmie and Coriolanus are also pretending that nothing is wrong. I think with this status quo, he wouldn't pick a side and coast on neutrality for as long as possible.
In the future, I think it gets trickier. Even if Clemensia and Coriolanus drift apart and stop talking, I don't think he'd necessarily feel the need to stop talking to one or the other, and I don't think either would ask him to (Festus would become an unwitting middleman for news about the former friends to each other). Since I headcanon Clemensia joining the Rebellion and Coriolanus being Coriolanus, this middleman situation gets trickier too, but Festus would for the most part remain unaware of the tension.
Once he does become more aware of Coriolanus being Coriolanus, he'd side with Clemmie (but the question is how much siding with her does he have time to do? I haven't quite hammered out an exact timeline for him becoming more aware). It's namely Felix's murder that sways him. I answered this ask earlier about the same fic which mentions Festus maybe having an idea of honorable competition, and Coriolanus' poisonings/murders falling outside of that (I will add that Festus could just disapprove of Coriolanus murdering any random person but still tolerate it. Capitol politics is cutthroat. But Festus would have a lot of hang ups when those people are more familiar to him/friends). Ultimately, in the future, Festus would choose Clemmie over Coriolanus even if Clemmie (in my interpretation) is doing treason and as of Allegory of the Cave, scapegoating random Capitolites to keep Coriolanus' attention off her. I think she'd steer clear of involving/scapegoating any friends, so Festus would be relatively fine with that.
Thanks for the ask, Medea! I think I'm almost done with the other section!
“I hear you’ve brokered a marriage for my brother.”
Maximinius’ mother hums. Her teacup just below her chin. Her breath sends a ripple across the surface of her tea.
Her eyes flick up to his face before she takes a sip.
She sets her teacup down on the table before them.
“Well, it didn’t seem that you were making any arrangements, busy as you are.”
“You failed to inform personally before you made the announcements.”
There is an absent-mindedness to his mother that puts him on edge. Is she really not thinking? Is she teasing him?
“Did Albanus not tell you?”
“He assumed that you would tell me before he got the chance.”
It was a fair assumption. His and Albanus’ paths rarely crossed.
She sends out her little newsletters. Maximinius had gotten a few when he’d decided to live in an apartment closer to the University during his studies.
His mother had let him after he’d made some excuse about making connections. She’s so fond of impressing on him the importance of socializing and being personable.
“Creusa’s a good girl. She’ll take him in hand.”
