I've been wanting to talk about the relationship between Meeps and Elidibus for some time to organize my thoughts on them. They have a very complicated dynamic due to Meeps being the reincarnation of Selene, Themis's wife during ancient times.
Selene and Themis were very much in love. It was a fairy tale romance. Love at first sight. They loved each other so much that when Themis accepted the role as Heart of Zodiark, he fused a part of his soul with Selene in order to always be with her.
As much as I would like Themis and Meeps to have a happy ending and end up together, I can never see it happening. It could only end in tragedy. The truth of the matter is: Elidibus, as we meet him in the MSQ, doesn't love Meeps, he still loves Selene. This love has been twisted over the centuries into something grotesque. The more I thought about it, the more it has become clear to me: Elidibus grooms Meeps. She is 19 when she first meets him and had lived a very isolated life. He is her first love, she doesn't know any better. Elidibus never once sees her for who she is now, he still sees her as Selene and molds her into a replica of his long-dead wife. Who Meeps is as a person now doesn't matter to Elidibus because one day, she will regain her memories and become the woman he loves again. Had he gotten his own way, Meeps would never have been given the opportunity to become her own person.
I don't think Meeps truly recognizes that how Elidibus treated her was wrong. She mourns him. She believes she loves him, to the point where talking about him is difficult. What complicates things is that memories of Selene's life begin to resurface following his death. She dreams of random moments of her past life and her feelings become even more mixed up to the point where she cannot differentiate between her own feelings and Selene's.
Fae'a, their son, also complicates things. Meeps's treatment aside, Elidibus truly was a great father to Fae'a, and Marie, despite her coming from a different father.
Side note: Even though Meeps had a brief (also toxic) relationship with another man (Ser Charibert), I don't see it bothering Elidibus very much. From his POV it was merely an unfortunate result of Selene having not recovered her memories yet. Something that would be fixed with the rejoining. The man is dead anyway, so he is out of the way.
My conclusion is: I think Meeps willingly overlooks how Elidibus/Themis treated her and only sees the good in him. Its a mixture of two things. 1. Confused feelings coming from her memories of Selene's life: she is very much experiencing Selene's love for Themis. 2. She simply doesn't want to acknowledge that he wronged her.
Two things can be true at the same time: he can have been both a great father to her children and have abused her. Meeps cannot see it that way as of right now though, he is still the great love of her life.
