Broken Promises --Meera & Zayn
So I wrote this today and I was like "hmm, I really like the concept." And therefore, here I am. Posting it here for Meera.
Meera glanced up at the night sky and watched as the snow twirled down and gently hit her in the face, softly before melting into a puddle of water. It was Christmas Eve here in New York and while other people were snuggled in the warmth of their houses with their loved ones, she was standing outside in the cold, looking out at the brightly lighted Brooklyn Bridge. She was alone with nothing but the dark and the snow to keep her company but yet, it felt like she was cozy and exactly where she belonged.
It was a year ago, from this exact moment that she had made a promise with someone to meet at this exact same place. She had promised that person her life, her love and most of all her soul. And Meera Sanghvi, kept her promises.
“I don’t want to do this.”
“You should and you will,” Meera had replied back with as much confidence as she could muster.
“But that means that I have to be away from you, away from us, and away from what we should be.” He held her slender hands with his big ones and pulled her close to his chest, capturing both their hands against his heart and never letting go.
“This is your dream. I can’t let you break your dream for us. I’d never forgive myself. This is who you are and I am not going to stand in the way. There is a whole world out there; waiting for you and it’d be selfish of me to tell you to stay. And you know how much of a good girl I am. Can’t ruin my image can I?” Meera didn’t give a rat’s ass about her “good girl” image but if this made him feel better and lighten the situation, then so be it.
He smiled and kissed her hands. He bended down and pushed his forehead against hers, “Promise to wait for me. No matter how long it takes, I’ll always come back. But just…just wait for me.”
“Promise me, Meera. Promise me that you’ll wait for me.”
“I promise I’ll wait for you. No matter however long it may take. I’ll always be yours. Heart, body and soul.”
He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips, letting go of her hands and sliding them up her neck and gently holding the sides of her face. Meera opened her mouth to let his tongue slide in and tried very hard to not shake, to not cry. She knew she had to be strong, not only for her but for him too. Meera wrapped her arms around his check and pulled him closer to her body, never wanting to let go.
“Mine,” he whispered to her.
Meera wiped the tears from her cheeks and remembered her promise to him. She had promised him she’d wait and she still was. However, she wasn’t so sure that he remembered. He had made her promise that she’d wait for him but she hadn’t made him promise that he would wait for her.
A year had passed and she had received no phone call, no letter, no text, no email…nothing. When she had told him that he needed to follow his dream, she hadn’t thought that he’d completely disappear on her. It’d been over a year and she hadn’t heard from him, seen him or even felt him. The closest she had ever been to seeing him was on the big billboard posters around the streets, in videos, magazines or even their old photographs which she kept stored in her closet.
Meera turned around and started walking towards the closest underground subway station in order to go home when she came upon him. Another photograph, this one bigger than the other giant billboards around the city. He was coming to New York. For a concert. On New Years. Which was in less than a week. And she wouldn’t get to see him.
Fate had a cruel way of coming back and biting you in the ass.
She had been the one to push him to go and follow his dreams and now that he had, she was regretting ever moment of it.
Meera’s phone rang at the exact same moment as she boarded the subway. “Hello?”
“I got front row tickets and backstage pass to his concert.”
Meera’s heart broke. “Shifu, why would you do that?”
“Meera. I’m sorry. I know he told you to wait for him but he deserted you. No phone call, no nothing. If you go to his concert and he doesn’t recognize you then that means you can move on Meera. You can leave that douche of a bag behind and move on and fall in love all over again. And this time with a guy who doesn’t leave you alone.”
“I was the one that told him to follow his dreams. I can’t do this to him. If he doesn’t remember me than I know I made the biggest mistake of my life telling him to follow his dreams but if he does, than I don’t want to live in the fear of not being good enough for me.”
“What the hell are you saying Meera?”
“He is a celebrity now and who am I? I’m a no one Shifu. I work at a bookstore nonetheless and own a crappy apartment which I call home whereas he is worth a million dollars now. He’d never want me.”
“He’d never be worth a million dollars Meera if you hadn’t been the one to push him towards his dream in the first place. Meera, you need closure. You have been declining all dates for the past one year and do you ever stop and wonder if he has been doing the same? Do you ever wonder if he was faithful to you? Those girls…”
“Are rumors Shifu. I can’t…”
“SHUT UP Meera. Listen to yourself. You need to move on. You need to understand that he might not be coming back to you. You need to give other guys a chance. Varun –he’s half in love with you Meera. He comes to the bookstore every day and buys a book and god knows that he does NOT read. He likes you.”
“Come to the concert with me. If he doesn’t remember you then you’ll have your answer and if he does remember you than you can have the very thing that you have been waiting all year for. Him.”
“Okay.” Meera’s voice was nothing more than an audible whisper. Seven days to go and she was already dreading every moment of it.
Meera ended her phone call and closed her eyes. Seven days until she met him. Seven days until One Direction’s concert. Seven days until she could see Zayn Malik. Seven days until her future was decided for her. Seven days.
