Canada's FIRST GeoWoodstock, eh!
August 22, 2020
(I just really really adore the highland cow mascot for next year’s Mega. He’s the best.)
The annual Mega-events in the UK (there’s at least two on back-to-back weekends: Piratemania and UK Mega) are known far and wide for how meticulously planned they are and the huge amount of entertainment they offer to their guests. At the 10th Anniversary Yorkshire UK Mega, they set up a temporary campground where you could camp in your tent or RV for the whole week and take part in daily sightseeing excursions in various places around Yorkshire in the leadup to Saturday. Every evening there were themed parties at the big tent (main venue) near the campground. While there are many geocaches to find and geocaching supplies for sale, that isn’t the entire focus of the event. The whole thing is geared toward everyone, with or without a geocaching background - which I found very different from the Finnish Megas I’ve been to (and even Sweden FAD), which tended to focus more tightly on geocaching (e.g. geocaching-related lectures and workshops, geocaching supply retailers only, climbing/rappelling lessons, etc.). Non-geocaching visitors at the UK Mega mention the appeal of basically getting an week-long camping holiday without having to organize everything themselves.
It’s at a scale which is basically unimaginable in Finland - firstly it’s a matter of population, secondly spending a few days at a campground doesn’t seem like a popular way to spend a vacation around here (unless it’s at a beach), and thirdly just that the geocaching community is much more structured in the UK (and in other European countries where they do a lot of these big events). Having a formal organization like the Geocaching Association of Great Britain helping out makes it a lot easier to recruit helping hands and enthusiastic folks who will stick it out through at least three years of continuous planning and fundraising (and lend legitimacy to sponsorship requests). And there’s also a kind of stakeholders’ group, consisting of past Mega committee members, making sure that event proposals are sensible and that experiences and lessons learned from each event are taken note of for the future. When it all comes together, it is something amazing and beautiful.
We only had the one day to spend at the Mega event, so it was a little rushed for me because there was so much to do. I wanted to experience “rambling” through the fields and check out the village pub, so that took up several hours. At this kind of large event I don’t want to stick with my “in-group”, so I made a point not to spend too much time with my travel companions.
What I would love to do is to have the camping experience at one of these things. I’m at the age where everything is mildly nostalgic, and the whole campground tenting thing is something I haven’t done for a zillion years. I remember going with my uncle and aunt and my cousins, and making Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup and Kraft Dinner on the Coleman stove. But I don’t really know anybody in the UK, and even if I managed to get myself there with the minimum gear I need for tenting (haha good luck with that, zero-backpacking-experience me), I’d probably need to hitchhike to the campground and the event site.
