So who was gonna tell me that you have a team up battle with Corbeau against a... Mega Gardevoir and Mega Gallade. There are actually pretty interesting parallels here and I really need to talk about them… Yap session incoming

So, Gallade is stated over and over again to be a protector, as well as a fierce battler.

Its dex entry from Shield:

Sharply attuned to others’ wishes for help, this Pokémon seeks out those in need and aids them in battle.

Corbeau is honestly pretty similar to it. He may be kind of shady but at the end of the day he does use his organization to help people in Lumiose. He sends you to deal with lost wild Pokémon and annoying people that are bothering children, he even sends Philippe to keep people away from the rogue Mega Starmie so they won’t get hurt. He’s also shown to enjoy Pokémon battling and expresses appreciation towards the player after your promotion match against him, even inviting you to come back and battle with him again. Not to mention the scene where he throws hands with you against that random guy that was part of the protest against Jett… my man loves to fight. Gallade = him.

Now, as for the Gardevoir, it parallels the player. Much like Gallade, Gardevoir is also a protective Pokémon, and its dex entries tell us that it holds extreme psychic power.

Its dex entry from Violet:

It unleashes psychokinetic energy at full power when protecting a Trainer it has bonded closely with.

The game is setting up from the beginning for the player to be the most powerful Mega Evolution user, and that you will need to use this power to protect Lumiose. Much how a Gardevoir will unleash its full power to protect its trainer. Even outside of that you’re doing your part as a Team MZ member with taking care of all of the rogue Mega Evolutions. Heck, even all of the side quests where you help out npcs. The player, while they may be a tourist, clearly comes to hold love for the city and the people and Pokémon that live there.

But the most interesting thing about this battle to me is that Gamefreak chose to put them together, and that they chose to have you fight them with Corbeau. Everyone knows that Gallade and Gardevoir go together… and their Mega Evolutions have that whole prince and princess motif going on. Mega Gallade and Mega Gardevoir are practically a couple (obviously this whole scenario I’m presenting would work better with a female player-character, but Gardevoir can be any gender so whatever). While I don’t think this battle was necessarily to imply that Corbeau has romantic feelings for the player, I think it was at least to show us in a metaphorical way that he sees the player as an equal, like a partner. You’re the Gardevoir to his Gallade, both sharing the desire to protect Lumiose. Blushes and giggles. Do with this information what you will. I’m probably overthinking this lol but I thought the implications were interesting. Yap session over

This is my first time being part of a zine project and I’m glad to say was a great experience! The whole thing was well organised, the arrangers were nice and easy to communicate with & kept us well informed, and the other contributors were happy to give feedback!

This comic is my continuation for Pokémon Masters EX event ”All Aboard The Victory Train”! Cynthia visits Unova regularly to see Caitlin and compete in Pokémon World Tournament but for some curious reason hasn’t been to the Battle Subway. The twins must feel anxious about it!

As a side note, during my character research @skyreptain pointed out to me that in Wally’s room in ORAS there is a globe with pins in both Sinnoh and Unova, but it isn’t addressed any further. What could this mean?

I wish I could’ve included many more ideas in here but cramming a battle between 8 characters within 4 pages was already quite the challenge so I had to cut off quite a bit (and I had to rush some parts unfortunately). I hope the result is still entertaining!
