'That dear and gentle God...who has taken from me everyone that I've loved most in the world.'

The Thorn Birds | Ralph & Meggie
Don't you see? It's part of her plan. I've brought in £13 million. And a holy priest who's brought in £13 million will not be left to languish here in the back and beyond. The Church knows how to reward its own.
Ralph & Meggie | The Thorn Birds (1983)
Should Father Ralph de Bricassart and Meggie Cleary divorce?
Yes, absolutely
No, their love is forever
No, they're perfect for each other (derogatory)
They should divorce remarry and divorce again that's how divorced they should be
I don't know these characters but they look cute together
I don't know these characters but they should divorce
I have zero opinion on their relationship status
Reason:
Father Ralph hung around Meggie when she was a child, because he wanted affection without it leading to sex, so he picked her because she wasn't tempting. Meggie was always overlooked by her father and brothers, and her mother hated her just for being a girl, so Father Ralph was the only person she had to teach her and support her. When she grew up and confessed her love to Father Ralph, he cast her aside like she was nothing, because now he was tempted, so her being around was no longer beneficial to him. Then he kept coming in and out of her life for various reasons, teasing her with the idea of them being a proper couple and then dashing her dreams all over again. A lot of other gross stuff happens between them, but the point is that Meggie deserves so much better, and Father Ralph needs to get served a restraining order.
A playlist for when you fall in love with a priest who you can’t be with because of his prior commitment to God. So you marry an asshole who looks like him, just to have said priest’s love child.
Meggie Cleary is a proof that you can write a female character who is dumb, simple, unambitious, has no interests, only wants a child and a husband and she still would end up lovable, strong as anything, admirable and worthy of your time as a reader. With this obsession of writing strong female characters people forgot how to write real characters. She doesn't have to be cheeky all the time.
