Battle of Çamurlu, the Execution of Musa Çelebi and the End of Ottoman Civil War
On July 5, 1413, Mehmed Çelebi secured a decisive victory over his brother Musa Çelebi at the Battle of Çamurlu, bringing a brutal chapter of Ottoman dynastic conflict to a close. The struggle was part of the Ottoman Interregnum, a period of civil war that followed the defeat and capture of Sultan Bayezid I by Timur in 1402, leaving his sons to fight for control of the fractured empire. At Çamurlu, Mehmed’s forces gained the upper hand, breaking Musa’s remaining resistance.
Following his defeat, Musa Çelebi was captured and executed, eliminating Mehmed’s final rival for the throne. Mehmed Çelebi—later known as Mehmed I—emerged as the uncontested ruler, credited with restoring unity to the Ottoman state and stabilizing its institutions after years of chaos. His victory marked the beginning of imperial recovery and set the stage for future Ottoman expansion.
