Of Stars and Angels

Genre: Romance/Tragedy/Comedy? Series: Magi/Magi the Labyrinth of Magic/Magi the Kingdom of Magic Pairing(s): MeiEi (Koumei Ren x Hakuei Ren),misc others. First is the main focus of this story,however. This is a mulitichapter fic! Rating: Ranges from PG13 to Mature. Summary: From the time she was young until she was an adult, Hakuei’s eyes and heart were purely for her second oldest cousin. Call it a childish crush, but he was the only one that caught at her heart strings; he was always gentle to her. And he loved her too,but too afraid to say a thing.  One kiss at night changes everything - and alters their fates as they know it.

Hakuei’s nineteenth birthday wasn’t unlike any other day - strange considering she was the princess of a nation. 

She herself wasn’t much for parties, as much fun as they could be. Well,she wasn’t for parties centered on herself, one could say. Hakuei wasn’t a woman for tossing herself into the limelight much. 

Truth be told, princess, general, dungeon capturer, or maybe in the future queen, Hakuei muchly preferred to be in the library reading, in her room sewing, or taking care of her younger brother, Ryuu. 

But books were something she loved. And that’s how she spent her birthday, immersed in a book of old fairy tales that her older brothers Yuu or Ren read to her as a child.

These stories kept her entertained all day, going through the first, and all the subsequent scrolls after them from the morning until early evening. Hakuei only noticed that it was dusk when the sunlight started to fade and it was getting dark fast. Cursing her lack of foresight, and also her carelessness of the time, Hakuei rose from her cross-legged position on the floor, completely stiff from sitting for hours on a hard,flat surface.

Hakuei felt dizzy from lack of food, legs were a little numb as well. She swayed a bit, nearly falling - but the young girl was caught by a pair of arms before her body met the floor. She stiffened,thinking a servant or someone else caught her.

“Lady Hakuei, are you alright?” she recognized the voice, and Hakuei let her body relax a little. It was Mei, so she felt instantly safe.

“I’m fine, Koumei.” Hakuei smiled up into his face, blue eyes twinkling. “I’m just finding that I am a little tired and somewhat dizzy - I’ve spent my whole day reading, time got away from me and I forgot to eat is all.”

He found himself surprised that she hid herself away in the library of all places on her birthday. All day long,her fourteen year old brother had been on the prowl for her,trying to find her. 

But he never thought to look in here, Koumei thought to himself. He was glad he was the first one to find Hakuei, and have her all to himself for a bit.

“Explains why you haven’t been around much today.” his voice held an amused tone to it. “Hakuryuu was on the war path earlier trying to find you, it was rather funny to watch.”

She made a noise, sounding like a sigh. Little Hakuryuu,always over protective of his older sister. Not like she minded in the least - it was actually rather nice. But he never looked deep in the library. She giggled, a soft sound that brought a smile to her companion’s face.

“You really should eat, Lady Hakuei. Your brother would have my hide if I don’t get you to.” He released her, making sure first that she could stand on her own - it wouldn’t do for her to crash to the ground like she almost did earlier. Hakuei was a little lightheaded but otherwise alright, and she followed him out of the large, book filled room down the hallways of the palace. Hakuei encountered her little brother in the hall and he chattered at her for a little bit, and she smiled all the while.

A few hours later, time found her feeling much better after a good meal, and the moon had come out to shimmer down on the warm summer evening. The only thing she liked about her birthday was the season she was born in. And there was a full moon - the last time that happened was her ninth birthday.

Hakuei was looking out into the night, dreaming a little as her eyes wandered over the silvery landscape, and but not so distracted that she didn’t notice when Koumei settled down beside her.

“I’d love to take a walk out there.” she was thoughtful. “But it’s so late at night I’m pretty sure I’d be stopped if I went out alone.” Hakuei looked at the older man, one that could easily make a person melt.

“I know you prefer being inside but please walk with me?” the girl pleaded. “I don’t want to bother Kouen right now.”

“You didn’t need to ask.” he smiled warmly at her. “I could already tell.” Koumei got up and easily linked his arm with hers when she followed suit, a smile on her face.

It wasn’t cold outside, so she didn’t feel the need for a warmer outer robe, and it was easier to move around. The world at night was extremely pretty, with the moon and the stars shedding a gilt light over everything. She felt slightly giddy and jittery, and thought it was the excitement of being outside in the moonlight - not the company she was keeping.

Hakuei never said it out loud, but since she was very young she harbored a childish crush on Koumei. She was never sure why, but the sight of his smile or the sound of his voice always made her smile no matter what was going on. And as she got older, it had developed into full blown love. But Hakuei was wise enough not to show it. Anyone knowing could lead to disastrous consequences.

And there was no way he could love her back. All he viewed her as was his stepsister and a sweet person, at least in her mind.

But she was completely wrong. There was a reason he constantly gave into her requests, spent time with her and generally was protective. He did love her, with all his heart in fact. His eyes followed her where ever she went, but never fully noticed.

A walk in the moonlight suited him, so he could have her to himself. Not sharing with their family, much as he loved them. And when she looked away he could gaze at her warmly. 

He followed along after her, an hour passing as they blissfully walked deeper into the gardens.

Hakuei turned around and came back towards him, presumably to say she was done and wanted to go back in to head to bed, if she hadn’t tripped over a stray tree root in the garden and fell into his arms once more and making him fall onto his back.

This time it was a little unbearable,her soft body pressed into his. Something he had been dreaming about for some nights over the last few years, but not in the way it was happening now.

And on her side, Hakuei felt her cheeks go red when his arms wound around her protectively. It was hard to think correctly, with him so close. Unintentionally, her hands went up to settle on his chest. Hakuei could feel his heart beating fast, like a fluttering bird in a cage.

“Are you alright?” his quiet question startled her out of her reverie. Her face became redder, and Koumei couldn’t help but think that was absolutely adorable.

“I-I’m alright. Are you?” she knew he had a somewhat delicate frame, and was slightly worried she hurt him.

“I’m fine, my main concern is for you, Lady Hakuei.” She’s so close, he thought inwardly. Her lips were right there, for the taking.

And for once, he didn’t care what happened if he acted before he actually thought.

The last thought in his mind before he kissed her was of the sweetly startled look in her eyes.

what’s your favorite headcanon of Mei/Hakuei? favorite AU ideas?

Since Ohtaka-sensei never wrote their first meeting, I have imagined it myself. When Hakutoku was still king and the Haku bros alive, Kouen and Koumei used to visit them and train with them. They hadn’t met Hakuryuu (bc he was a baby) or Hakuei (bc the princess wouldn’t go to the training ground). Koumei was trying to avoid training so he escaped to a near garden and fell asleep (typical Mei xD). Hakuei found him to her favourite garden and at first she was afraid that he had fainted. 

After they properly introduced themselves to each other and realized that they were relatives , they made a deal. Hakuei wouldn’t tell anyone that Koumei was hiding in the garden when he was supposed to be training and in exchange he would teach her how to hold a sword and practice some basic steps (because Hakuei always wanted to know swordsmanship but her brothers wouldn’t let her).

So, they started meeting on almost a daily routine and soon enough the time they spend on their secret garden became their favourite. Usually, after Koumei’s sword lessons they just sat down in silence and enjoyed the nature together. Koumei would probably fall asleep at some point and Hakuei would play with the pigeons that always surrounded her cousin

Here are some MeiEi AU:

Sleeping Beauty AU: An evil magi (Arba!) cursed the beautiful princess  to sleep in eternity unless someone who truly loved her would give her a kiss. Thankfully for her, prince Koumei loved her for such a long time and he would to anything to wake her up, even fight with the evil magi if it was needed.

Swan Lake AU: Hakuei will be the enchanted princess who turns into a swan every day, Koumei will be the prince falling in love with her and Arba can be the black swan.

The Phantom of the Opera AU: Ok, this story doesn’t have a happy ending (at least not for the Phantom) so we’ll take just the concept because Koumei’s mask really reminds me of the Phantom’s one. Perhaps instead of following the actual story Koumei and Hakuei could sing the wonderful duet “The Phantom of the Opera” ?

Modern Kou Family AU: This story features all the beloved family members. Gyokuen has recently married Koutoku and she and her children has come to live with his family. This is where Koumei meets Hakuei and slowly feelings start to develop between them. Bonus scene! Koumei and Hakuei are the only old enough Ren children to work to the family’s company (besides Kouen ofc). So, each morning the three of them go together to work using Kouen’s car. While Kouen is talking about some nerdy historical topic, those two try not to stare each other too much bc they feel awkward xD

This song always reminded me of MeiEi :)

Especially the lyrics “ You are brighter than the stars/Believe me when I say/It’s not about your scars/It’s all about your heart”. Both Hakuei and Koumei have scars (physical and emotional) but I believe they can see the beauty inside the other’s soul.

This is a bit old song but it fits them so well. Obviously it’s Koumei ->Hakuei because I think poor Mei believes that Hakuei is so perfect that she will never look at him.

what kind of dates do you think they would go on?

I can’t imagine them doing something flashing or something that would put them on stoplight. I believe they would prefect something cozy, like eating on their favourite restaurant and then watching a movie both enjoy together. Maybe roaming around to their favourite places. Once in a while they would probably go trips to the countryside to enjoy the nature.

Damn talking about them, make me remember how much I like this rare pairing.

Hi~ same meiei anon from before, I just thought of another meiei scenario: sumomomo momomo AU where koumei swears fealty to yakuza heir hakuei after she saves his life from assassins and becomes her closest subordinate, also calling her “nee-san” despite being older than her. However she constantly rags on him for being a lazy otaku, and only time will tell if koumei’s feelings will reach her

I apologize! I don’t remember Sumomomo momomo much! But I believe the character you are referring to is the blond dude who followes the ponytail blonde girl?

That said at the very least we canonically have Koumei being loyal to the former royal hakus ^^ but awww Hakuei is kinda mean to him huh? I personally love how sweet and respectful they are too each other. Hakuei is such a sweetie though I guess seeing another personality in her is interesting! (let’s not talk about Arba doing stuff in her body though...)

I don’t know if youre still into hakuei/koumei or not but I was just thinking about the final battle in Magi and imagining hakuei reuniting with koumei like when morgiana came back in chapter 194, with Koumei falling from exhaustion and Hakuei catching him, carrying him bridal-style in her djinn equip :3

First of all, I apologize for such a late reply. Second, yes I still like them! and that’s a cute headcanon <3 I would really like to see a reunion between Koumei and Hakuei, since he cares a lot about her and after the “betrayal” (arbakuei did it though) in the civil war. Hakuei’s possession was brushed aside I wish we had seen more of her thoughts about her actions and Hakuryuu too...

I prefer the Hakumei because it sounds so similar to both Hakuei and Koumei. However, I think Meiei is their official ship name (anyway, both are good ship names I guess)
