@bonesmakenoise, I noticed your tags. You go early, very early, on a weekday. You wait in front of a closed gate and launch a cavalry charge, death or glory, as soon as it opens. You need to know exactly where you want to go. Then you cross your fingers, and mutter prayers and curses. You usually have about half an hour before the tour buses arrive. I think even now, as we reel under overtourism, that still holds true. I took this photo ↓ at Meigetsu-in just after it opened at 9 a.m., and then I ran for my life into the mountains before 10 a.m.
