I probably shouldn't use this exact phrasing with my child but sometimes when she's upset about the things toddlers get upset about, my go-to is "Yeah that sucks, I'm sorry".
Because I literally never heard that (or anything similar) growing up. To this day, the moment I express any sort of negative emotion about ANYTHING I'm met with reasons why I shouldn't feel that way or why I should know it was expected or reasons to just ignore it.
And it sucks.
