Papua New Guinea Independence Day
16 September 1975
Indigenous rights activist and social justice campaigner Dr Evelyn Scott, shown here with her iconic hat.
Remember that there is what we call haole sanctioned schools in Pasifika Oceania Where they beat you for speaking your Indigenous te reo, praying to your gods goddesses and demigods, or practicing any facet of your Indigenous Pasifika culture It was a facet of cultural genocide in our island homes and a big reason why language spirituality and tattoo revival is important to me as a culture language and story keeper
I speak to you my elders my ancestors my gods and goddesses
With a bloody mouth and broken hands
I can’t speak your language
My mind and my mouth can’t understand
They made sure of that
Even if my heart and soul does
Asking as an Asian Native Pasifika API or ANHPI When you say AAPI or Asian American Pacific Islander Better yet AANHPI or Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Ask yourself Are you only amplifying lighter East Asians Cuz of racism and colorism Or are you also you including darker skinned North Southwest South and Southeast Asians also
Are you including Polynesians Micronesians and Melanesians in this also? Or are you adding to more active Indigenous erasure Ooh an AAPI or AANHPI hashtag but there’s no darker skinned Asian kin or Pasifika Natives Just more colorism and Indigenous erasure We can do better diversity and inclusion in the fucking 2020s yeah
Why I use API or ANHPI and not AAPI as a Asian Native Colorism of only highlighting lighter East Asians Erasure of darker skinned West South and Southeast Asians Native Erasure of Polynesian Micronesian and Melanesian Indigenous Pasifika
I’m not Asian American Remember that Following Trask and her thoughts I also don’t tie myself to any fucking settler state Be it Amerika Kanada Europe Australia etc My Indigenous people predate these settler nations Settler nations dont own marginalized Indigenous people By the creator they will outlast them I’m API or ANHPI Asian Indigenous Pasifika not AAPI I don’t use this as identifier
AAPI month in general just adds to more Indigenous erasure Cuz why are you adding an entire Indigenous community as a footnote afterthought to another marginalized community? It’s why Asian Heritate Month and Pasifika Indigenous heritage month should be two separate months
Disappointed but never surprised at Indigenous Native or Indigenous Pasifika erasure is a community experience Polynesian Melanesian and Micronesian and other Indigenous Pasifika What month are we moving Indigenous Pasifika Heritage month to away from Asian Heritage Month cuz I’m fucking tired of this Native erasure
When it’s aapi and AANHPI month will yall uplift Polynesians Micronesians Melanesians and other indigenous pasifika too Or just Asians (esp lighter East Asians) yet again Or should we just separate AA and PI for good and have separate months so a marginalized group doesn’t overshadow natives again and add to more erasure
"The interconnected marine reserves will cover at least six million square kilometers, and the project is expected to become the world’s largest transboundary marine protected area."
"This initiative represents a bold and timely step forward, recognising that our oceans do not end at national boundaries, and that our stew
Subregions (Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia and Australasia), as well as sovereign and dependent islands of Oceania
