North American Spur-throated Grasshoppers (Genus Melanoplus), nymphs, taken May 23, 2026, in Georgia, US
A couple little grasshoppers hiding amongst the leaves of a marigold patch! These flowers, planted as pest deterrent in a garden, were attracting all sorts of bugs, most notably jumping spiders and grasshoppers. The jumping spiders were on the lookout for unsuspecting little bugs, but the grasshoppers were likely using the dense foliage as cover from predators. Being a little grasshopper is scary, and a vegetable garden is about as close to a nursery as they'll get in the wild. Eventually, they'll move into the grassy fields, but they'll take cover in this safe(er) space for now!
Bug of the Day
If you throw up a light and a sheet in a field, you're gonna get Orthopterans. This was one of the more interesting ones that I saw last weekend. Somehow, still just yet another Melanoplus sp.
(Thx to @eumorpha-dream for throwing up the light and the sheet)
hello, I was at Virginia beach yesterday and in the afternoon we got totally swarmed by grasshoppers! I’ve never seen this before despite going to the same beach each summer! posted on inat but no one has suggested an id so I wanted to ask you! some of them had pink/red inside their legs but you can’t really tell from the photo:
thank you!!
Grasshopper ID - VA, USA:
Hello, yes, this is a Differential Grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis), family Acrididae.
They are known to swarm like this, much to the chagrin of some gardeners and farmers.
