Melinda Gebbie
I have never really found an interest in comic art, however I can appreciate the time and skill involved when creating this form of art. However on the 29th of January 2014 I attended a lecture at the University of Northampton and I was truly blow away by Melinda Gebbie, an inspirational lady and American comic artist. By the time I left the lecture I was buzzing with inspiration and motivation, with the quote “we will all be sorry when we are dead” planted deep into my head.
Melinda began the lecture by introducing herself as an illustrator who moved from America to England in 1984, who focused her work within the context of comics, illustrations and paintings. Her passion toward her work, her husband and the interpretation of women shined throughout her lecture.
In the 1990’s Melinda collaborated with her husband Alan Moore on the Lost Girls, writing and illustrating it for 16 years together. The graphic novel depicts the sexually explicit adventures of 3 important female fictional characters of the 19th-20th century: Alice, Dorothy Gale and Wendy Darling.
As well as discussing her illustration practice we was fortunate enough to receive her own opinions and suggestions when it comes to making it as an illustrator. “Put into work what you are made of, your ability to love, your own voice and your story: all art is your narrative”, this quote suggests that you need to show love and passion in you own work in order for people to believe in it themselves.
It has become apparent that Melinda’s love and passion for art and her own work has allowed her to become the successful woman she is today. “If your work doesn't talk back to you, you are not working hard enough”, all these quotations taken from her lecture truly inspires my passion and love of art, motivating me to continue working towards my dream job.
