On the left, my original (and very much half-assed/uninspired) attempt at a Haven/Conclave outfit for Quinn Trevelyan who was originally only there as a low level grunt/archer-for-hire sent there primarily by his family to find out what had happened to their Templar brother when the Circles rebelled/fell apart. It was intended to be only basic starting gear with more of a Chantry motif than what the game puts you in. I honestly did do some research when I designed it back in 2019/2020 but most of the resources I was able to find were basically just "stick him in a quilted gambeson with a thick sweater underneath to protect his throat/extremities.
On the right, the 2025 version I finished yesterday. Is it a much busier design? Yes. But I've learned a lot in five years and pulled from a lot more historical references and research. You can't see the linen quiver of arrows because it's strapped to his waist behind his back, though you can see a bit of it poking out behind the scabbard containing an emergency short sword and buckler for close quarters. We'll call this my post-Kingdom Come Deliverance era with the addition of a kettle bell style helmet (I know it would ruin his hair and I'm sorry), a chainmail coat to add a bit more protection both to the arms and beneath the padded coat and a few pieces of armour (a gorget and a pauldron on the bow arm). The Chantry sunburst pattern is still there (as I rather liked it). You could also maybe call this my take on a Chantry longbowman, though the House Trevelyan krayka is unique to Quinn.
Even though these were just test colours and CSP's watercolour brushes aren't very good at giving bright/bold colours which makes the newer drawing a little washed out, it's nice to see the two pieces side by side. My poor laptop struggles with my tablet and CSP due to its age, but it's still chugging away which is good since I sure as heck can't afford a new computer right now. So the colours were slapped on rather quickly just to get a rough idea of how it would all look together. But it's still really nice to see my level of improvement over several years. It's no secret I've been struggling with my creativity over the past year. This perked me up.
Also I hope you like the more historically accurate Haven/Conclave version. I'm working on different outfits gradually as the ideas/inspiration comes to me and so am planning to share them bit by bit until the final character reference sheet is ready to go (with bolder/brighter colours). I'm springboarding off this to work on the sort of piecemeal outfit cobbled together for that trek in the snow from Haven to Skyhold mainly because I had a bunch of rough sketches before starting that screenshot redraw and you don't actually get to see most of it! Feels like wasted work if I don't stick it in the reference sheet.
