After Melissa left, Benny sat on his Mother's bed thinking. He was really a fuck up as a man. It wasn’t his Mother's fault. It was his fault. His fault. He was a shitty ass son and he was an even worse man. His mothers death weighing on him. Then when he jumped up out his sleep and saw a pregnant Melissa. His mind went back to his Mother and how she wouldn't be here to see her grandson. As Benny sat there he made a decision to do something for his mother he couldn't do in life. That's make her proud.
He was going to become a better man. He was going to be a better father to his son than Tony was to him. He was going to do better by Melissa. He made up his mind he was going to be there for Melissa whether she liked it or not. He got up from the bed and went to go get in the shower. While in the shower he cried. The one person who believed in him. The one person who never failed him. The one person who gave him the strength to believe in himself. She was gone. She was in the morgue. His mind went to Melissa.
How he treated her. How he allowed Veronica to treat her. How he treated her even when his Mother bought her into the home. He remembered the conversation he and Melissa had in the kitchen when she told him she didn’t want nothing from him. She just wanted to be treated like a person. She didn’t want to be treated the way Jeffrey treated her like she had a disease. Benny didn’t listen to her though and continued to bad mouth her. A sob left his mouth as his mother's words echoed through his head. He needed to do right. He had to do right.
After his shower he decided to throw his bloody clothes in the garbage. He couldn't look at those clothes the same knowing they had his Mother's blood on it. He walked into his room and changed into a white tee shirt and ripped washed blue jeans. He put on the sterling silver cross his mother had gotten him for his 18th birthday. Something he hasn't worn in years. He put on his sneakers and grabbed his phone and car keys and left.
The ride to the hospital was spent with him praying Melissa gave him another chance. When he got there luckily Melissa hadn't gotten called yet and he sat next to her. Melissa looked at Benny and rolled her eyes as she started to count to 50. Before Benny could speak the nurse came and called Melissa's name. Benny tried to help Melissa up but she just glared at him.
Benny held his hands up and watched as she got up and wobbled her way over to the nurse. Benny followed behind her. The nurse took her weight, pressure, and temperature. Once done the nurse left Melissa and Benny in the room to go get the doctor. The silence between them two was thick. Melissa didn't want him there and Benny was just trying to do better.
“Sorry to hear that. I find someplace else to live.”
“No, you don’t have to I want you and my baby with me.”
“No, you don’t. You forget I heard every conversation with your Mother and how I needed to leave. How I wasn’t welcomed there?”
Benny rubbed his beard as his words slapped him in the face. He was about to open his mouth to speak when the doctor walked in the room.
“Hey Melissa. Where’s Ms. Hanna at?”
“She couldn’t make it. This is her son Benjamin.”
The doctor held her hand out for Benjamin to shake and Benjamin shook her hand.
“A friend of yours Melissa?”
“I’m the father of the baby.”
Benny spoke up looking between the doctor and Melissa.
“Wow. Nice to finally meet you. I guess better late than never. Okay Melissa how is the little one treating you?”
“Between hungry, pissed off, and too many other emotions.”
The doctor laughed as she got some gloves and put them on her hands. Benny watched the doctor lift Melissa’s shirt and he seen little feet moving. Benny got up and placed his big hands on Melissa’s stomach and he almost fainted. A small chuckle escaped his lips as he moved his hands around Melissa’s stomach.
Benny asked his eyes trained on Melissa’s stomach.
“Only when your ass comes around.”
Melissa hissed as she removed Benny’s hands from her stomach. Benny was hurt but sat back in his chair. The doctor felt the tension and didn’t say anything as she got the gel to put on Melissa’s stomach. Benny watched as the doctor moved the wand around Melissa’s stomach and looked from their to the machine. Then he seen his baby on the machine. His eyes got watery. This was the first time he had seen his baby.
“Wow. This is a first for us.”
The doctor spoke up. Benny and Melissa looked at each other then at the doctor.
“It’s nothing bad. Your baby is smiling.”
Melissa and Benny looked at the machine and sure enough the baby was smiling.
“Looks like this baby might be a daddy's boy."
"Please don't say that. I want him far away from me and my son."
The doctor looked at Melissa and Benny and could feel the tension.
"How about I leave and have you guys talk?"
Benny spoke up. The doctor nodded her head and wiped the gel off and left the room. Benny rubbed his beard and looked at Melissa who just kept looking at the machine.
"Melissa can we talk please?"
"The only person to ever show me any kind of was your mother and now she is gone."
"I'm still here. I want to be here for you and my baby. I know you hate me. You have every right to but please don't keep me from my baby."
"I have to think about both me and my son. You. You are stupid. Whenever your sister comes around you become even more stupid. So no I won't have you around him. I refuse for my child to die because you wanted to fuck with your sister again."
"I know and my mom always said dealing with my sister be my downfall but I am asking you. Give me a chance just a chance. I lost my mom, I cant lose you and I cant lose my baby. My mom told me to do better by you and I'm trying."
"You're trying to get on my nerves which is working. Why do you want to do right? Cause your mom is dead? Cause you feel the need to want to be a better man? You already told me what you thought of me and my baby. So no."
Benny looked at Melissa and realized that second chances are not easy. He has been given too many chances to do right and he never did.
"Do you know what is sad? I did like you. I did like you. Yea I wanted to fuck you, but you took me to your mom's house when Veronica threw me out. You could have taken me to a hotel and that meant a lot to me."
"I'm sorry for being a dumbass. My mom always told me I didnt have a lot of sense but I want to do better. Did you have your father?"
"Yea, until he got sick and I met Veronica and he died."
"I'm sorry I didn't know that. Is that why you wanted her to die?"
"Look, I'm not the best. I make dumbass decisions on a daily basis. I do want to do better by you. I want to be a dad. I know I have a lot to prove. First thing I'll do is cut ties with my sister. I'll ask Mrs. Cryer to help me find a house for us and I'll get a job. I just want a chance."
Melissa finally looked at Benny and seen the sincerity in his brown eyes.
"I shouldn't believe you or give you another chance but you have one chance."
A smile over took Benny's face. As he got up and placed his big hands on her stomach. The baby was kicking up a storm against Benny's hands. A chuckle escaped his lips as he seen the foot imprint against Melissa's stomach. The doctor walked back in the room and smiled seeing the scene in front of her.
"Are we good now Mommy and Daddy?"
Benny was too entranced by his child's movement that he didnt answer. He bent down and placed a kiss on Melissa's stomach. This is what his mother wanted. She wanted him to man up. She wanted him to do better. This was his chance to do better.
