what if one day melissanthi goes on tumblr and finds the acod tag or her tag and then stumbles upon all my borderline cult-type posts worshipping her
Atonement
Every time I sinned a door half opened, and the angels who in my virtue had never found me beautiful tipped over the amphora of their floral souls; every time I sinned, it was as though a door had opened and tears of compassion dripped among the grasses; but if the sword of my remorse chased me from heaven every time I sinned a door half opened and though men thought me ugly, the angels thought me beautiful. —Melissanthi a.k.a. Eve Choughi-Skandalaki (1910 - c.1991). Trans. Yannis Goumas. Four poems. It's women in translation month, isn't it? She knew German, French, and English, and translated across all four languages - Emily Dickinson, for instance.
One of the most impressive sights of Kefalonia, with strong historical and geological interest, is the cave of Melissani. In ancient times, the lake was a place of worship of Pan and the nymph Melissanthi. Legend says that Melissanthi committed suicide in the lake of regret because Pan did not respond to her love. According to another version, the shepherdess Melissanthi lost a sheep and as he tried to find it, he stumbled and fell into the lake. In the lake is an island to which archaeologist S. Marinatos discovered a sanctuary of Pan, the findings of which are in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli.
I return from the kingdom of Pluto, my dark husband, holding a small sprout for a torch to light with this the blaze of spring.
In Hades, coldness and fire, a cycle of unbroken silence beyond each hope holds me, a bound, living corpse. Next to the dead ones I kept vigil every brilliance of the world returning to ash. None is made with mortal body to resist such coldness and fire The fingers fall, mortify, The eyes burn, dry up --But by a tear of snow beneath the eyelids They can stay years guarded-- Hades has no words to teach you only if he can sever from you a scream at the hour when your voice is strangled in an iron vice. No one ever, away from danger, learned the secrets of hell Look at this small sprout, the torch I bring and, if possible, divine the colour of Hades.
