Skybox Master Series number 21, "The Melkotians." Art by Michele Laley, 1994.
Entry 69: Melkotians
Home World: Melkotia
Occupation: Creepy psychic aliens of the week
First Appearance: “Spectre of the Gun” (TOS 1968)
Summary: Creepy-lookin’ bastard, aint he? These guys were a species of floating alien beings who had incredible psychic powers, and preferred to keep to themselves. I mean, they REALLY did not like visitors; they kept warning beacons around their territory telling intruders to take a hike. When the “Enterprise” visited their home world despite their warnings, they basically decided, “all right, you jerks, we warned you! We’ll run you through a hallucination, forcing you to relive an episode from your planet’s violent past and get killed in the process since your mind will interpret the illusionary violence as being real, so there! Let’s see how you like being the Clanton Gang in the OK Corral!” Fortunately, it was pretty obvious that their analyses of the crew’s minds was incomplete, since fairly major gaps were routine in the given hallucination. There were gaps in the walls, gaps in the timeline… anyway, Spock finally decided to simply use his Vulcan mental discipline to ignore the bullets, and used a mind-meld to spread it to the rest of the crew. The Melkotians were so impressed by this, that they decided to start up peace talks with the Federation… and then we never saw them again. Phooey.
