Stephen Steinbrink doesn’t need a cool band name. He’s just got the chops. Here is a gifted songwriter who just goes by his name...Stephen Steinbrink, from Oakland, CA.
Stephen Steinbrink doesn’t really sound like the “normal” Oakland band. He tends more to minimal/beautiful pop. When I first listened to “Mom” I immediately thought of Green Gartside and Scritti Politti. Further listening brought to mind Jim Guthrie and his underlooked band, Royal City. I also think this is what John Maus would sound like if he focused on pop.
The only unfortunate thing here is that for a local musician, this is expensive. Melodic Records (UK) is releasing this Stephen Steinbrink LP.
