Hello :) I do know what it is and what it’s doing! It’s a male melonworm moth, and the fuzzy thing on its butt is his hair-pencil. Silly name for a structure used to disperse pheromones to attract a mate.

The first one is a Box moth! The very last one is a Miller moth!
(The first one is actually a melonworm moth and not a box moth they do look very similar though)

Ohhhh they are dispersing their pheromones by waving their hair pencil! It's either a melonworm moth or a cucumber moth in the genus Diaphania :)

A criminal!!! Possibly. This lad is a melonworm moth, so I’m not sure it was the one eating it? They usually stick to things like cucumber, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins, and watermelon. If you also have those in your garden it’s possible it was eating them and happened to pupate on a tomato. I’ve never heard of them eating tomato, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible, though!
This little dude landed on my arm one night a while back and hung around for a bit. I hadn't seen a moth (at least I think it's a moth) like this before and haven't seen another one since, but it's very pretty and has an iridescent sheen on its wings.
Excellent little dude! You didn’t tell me your location so I can’t say for sure but it would appear to be a melonworm moth. The fuzzy butt tufts are called hair pencils and are used in pheromone production! Both males and females have them in this species. Thanks for sharing!
