On Wednesday morning, a North Carolina news station tweeted that a candidate named "Deez Nuts" was surging in NC presidential polling. So, uh, what's going on here?
Deez Nuts has 9% of the polling in North Carolina; Meme Pride will win 2016.
In all seriousness though, who would have expected to see Deez Nuts trailing behind Trump? And behind Clinton too! There’s some people saying it’s pretty low-hanging fruit to make jokes about the news of Deez Nuts, though, but I’d have to say you’d be pretty ballsy to make any notable political statements on it.
Let’s face it though, when a write-in candidate can get 9% of the votes, even when he’s only campaigned for by a teenager, it really says a lot about America. It says we’re a country based less on ideals and concepts and more on entertainment and names. We’re a country that’d put in polls for a meme because “I know the name and it’s funny” rather than a legitimate candidate, because let’s face it - a meme would probably run the country better than our leading candidates.
What it really shows though is that memes have managed to become a major part of our culture, in my opinion; offline as much as online. No one could argue they aren’t part of online subculture, but it’s rather interesting to see memes become part of the larger American culture in such a remarkable way.
Keep on memeing it up, memesters. Deez Nuts 2016 here we go.
