12. “I killed him.”

Cass sat on the stairs and tried not to look at the body in the living room but she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do. Was she supposed to call the police? Would that come back on Jace? She didn’t know so all she could do was sit on the stairs and wait for him to come through the door. Of course she’d called him when the banging on the door started and she’d put the kids up in Delilah’s room since she had the little cubby in her closet but Cass hadn’t expected this. She ran a shaky hand through her hair at the sound of a car pulling up followed by someone running up the stairs and pushing the front door open. As soon as their eyes met Cass looked away towards the living room. “I killed him.” There was no emotion in her voice as she motioned to the gun sitting on the step next to her. She’d perfectly positioned herself half way up the stairs so that no one would get to her children if someone else came. “Del and Levi are in her room. I got them up there before he came in... the back door is broken.”  There was a pause as she took a breath. “I didn’t call anyone. I didn’t.... I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.”

Even with their son cuddled up against his side Cassie didn’t want to look at Trent at the moment. It wasn’t the first time they’d been in a hospital room after an accident at work but it was the first time since Liam was born. Their son who seemed oblivious to what was going on and was just happy to be cuddled. “If that’s your attempt at making me feel better, it’s not going to work.” As soon as she’d put the little boy down on the hospital bed she took a step back and ran her fingers through her hair. “You want to know what kind of visit I don’t want at the bar? Your Captain coming in to say you were hurt and he didn’t want to tell me over the phone. I mean yeah I’m thankful he came to pick me up and let me grab Liam before we came here but don’t give me that bullshit of it could have been worse. Worse is you dead.” She pointed out before shaking her head. Really she’d known from the beginning that being with a firefighter was going to be hard but having a baby with him made it harder. Hell they hadn’t even had their wedding yet. “He told me you went back in, why would you do that?”

When she’d called Celeste she’d tried to be calm on the phone but honestly there was no keeping Cass from spiraling when Lucian was involved. It didn’t matter how much time had passed or how strong she felt that she was. The moment she saw him she was a terrified nineteen year-old again and she did her best to get out of any place that he was but it hadn’t worked as well tonight. And with just a few words he’d crushed her. It threw her back to when she would do anything for him to be happy with her and all he’d done was say she looked so much prettier when she wasn’t trying so hard. 

So now here she was sitting on the floor against the foot of her bed with things tossed around the room. All of the clothes she wore to work showed she was trying too hard and so did the make up so most of it was now in a pile in the corner of the room. But none of it changed anything. None of it changed the fact that she had been so sure she was doing better. That she was happy with who she was but now it was in her head and she couldn’t shake it. Grabbing her lotion bottle off the ground she tossed it at the full length mirror she had on the back of her closet door not so much as flinching as the mirror shattered. Not until her cracked bedroom door was pushed open the rest of the way and she looked up at Alexander. “It’s a bad night Alex... go home.”

Over the years she’d gotten used to his possessive streak and she learned to just ignore it. After all she was the one that he kept coming back to so in her opinion it was the other way around. With both of the kids asleep she didn’t see a point in not commenting on what he said so she turned to look at him and crossed her arms over her chest. “Really? I belong to you? That’s hilarious.” Brushing past him she headed towards her bedroom. “I’m not the one that keeps coming around to spend my days with a human.” Cass pointed out with a smile. Part of her knew it wasn’t smart to poke at him the way that she was but she fully believed he would never take Max away from her.

It was normal for Cass to go to bed alone on a pretty regular basis. That was what happened when Trenton’s shifts included a good amount of the night. But she knew he’d be there when she opened her eyes in the morning. As long as he was safe she didn’t mind sleeping alone. So her favorite nights tended to be the ones where she woke up to the bed dipping as he slipped in behind her. All that really mattered was that he showered if there had been a fire because it was almost impossible to get that smell out of the sheets and she really couldn’t stomach it. “You’re home.” She mumbled before rolling over to face him. A sleepy smile covered her lips as she looked at him before her fingers dusted over his cheek. “I thought your shift went till seven? It’s still dark out.”

The last time she’d gotten up for the baby had been at two and there was no way she’d slept for over four hours already. “Are you okay?”

Cass cursed as she dropped her makeup bag and the items inside seemed to scatter. She knew that Corbin would be back soon and she couldn’t tell him what had happened. But he always came over early when they had dinner plans and tonight was no exception. “It’s nothing.” The blonde tried to shove things back into the bag with shaking hands while doing her best to let her hair cover her face. “I’ll be out in a few minutes. I didn’t get a chance to stop at the store so I’ll order something in. But just go sit down and I’ll be out in a few.”

Cass shivered but she knew it was from a fever and not from the temperature in the room. If there was one thing the man had been doing it was making sure she did’t die there. That would have made all of this useless. Looking up from her knees she saw Corbin in the doorway and she let out a choked sob. He was there for her. “You’re here.” She repeated in a broken voice but she didn’t move from her spot on the bed. The most recent bite on her forearm pulsed and she wondered if it was because the full moon was getting closer. “It’s too late though.” The blonde whispered as she slowly stretched out her arm.
