The Nitty Gritty: Listening to albums that are pretty rough around the edges, especially if it’s from a newer band, can be a bit of a tough thing to do. The album might be good, but its production, overall sound, and execution can get in the way of that, ultimately knocking it down a few pegs. That’s how I feel about French-Canadian band Seismic Breach’s debut LP, Memoricide. I came across this LP on Bandcamp in the death metal tags, but I thought I’d check it out, because I liked what I heard, and the album was free to download. I thought I’d check it out, and take a chance on it, because of that, but after listening to it a few times, it’s an album that I have some mixed thoughts on. This LP is a good one, as I enjoy their brand of melodic death metal, but it’s very rough around the edges. The production isn’t anything amazing, and its execution is rather bland, because I feel though as I’ve heard this kind of sound done a lot better elsewhere. At the same time, though, I like this album. It’s a bit too long for its own good, around 50 minutes, but it’s decent for what it is. The album is totally fine, so it’s not like it’s awful. The instrumentation is quite good, even if it can be hard to heard sometimes, since the production can be a bit rough sometimes, and how its sound doesn’t add anything to the table that’s melo-death.

Would I recommend this? Well, it depends, because if you’re a fan of melo-death, give this a listen. It’s free to download, so why not? The thing is, though, this LP is pretty generic, and rough around the edges, so if you’re not into the genre, let alone familiar with it, this might rub you the wrong way. You might not like this album that much, and it might come across as a weak first impressions of what this sub-genre has to offer, but since I listen to a lot of this stuff, I enjoy it just fine. I can acknowledge it’s pretty rough, but this has some potential. Like I said, too, the instrumentation is very good, so it has something going for it. In terms of melo-death, it’s fine, but the production isn’t great and the overall sound is very bland in spots. It’s also a bit too long, but it’s a good album overall. I would only recommend this, though, if you’re into this kind of metal already, because if you’re not, it wouldn’t be a good first impression.
