I could find much information about the history of dementia, until I came across this video. The first person recorded to have developed the disease was in 1901. She was described as being delusional, and having memory problems. After she passed away, they done an autopsy and they found plaques and tangles in her brain, which cause Alzheimer’s.
The most striking thing about this video as the fact that we can do more more for someone with dementia today than they could for a patient in 1901. In more than 100 years, we haven’t been able to come up with a cure, a way to prevent it or a way to slow it down.
Speaking to my Granda
Throughout this last few months, I have regularly been speaking to my Granda about his sister, Jessie. He tells me stories about the things that she does and says when he visits her. Although I’m not posting them all to this blog, they are a great way of helping me understand the way that someone with dementia acts.
