oeHow I am very glad that I decided to focus on memory this year, because I’m proud of the knowledge that I have developed about dementia. Prior to this year, I couldn’t have told the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, and know I feel as though I have a good knowledge about the subject. This has made me very aware of how much we need to raise awareness and money for charities like Alzheimer Scotland.Â
Project one - Reconstructing A Memory:Â
I enjoyed doing this project. It really made me think about how much memory we all associate with photographs, even though we might not remember everything that was in it. I thought that my new memory structures were very interesting, and stood well on their own, without having to be in a book as I wanted them to be looked at if they were just a normal photograph.Â
If I were to do the project again, I think I would have talked to my mum and dad more in depth about what they could remember. I did like the informal tone of the text though, as I thought this created the impression that you were sat looking through photographs with someone, reminiscing.Â
This project was very interesting. I found it interesting that all but two person chose something from their childhood as something ‘nostalgic’. Is this because we associate nostalgic with our past and feel inclined to chose something we owned then?Â
I liked how each photograph looked totally different because of the VSCO filters, really adding personality to the project.Â
If I were to do this project again, I would photograph more people. I think a variety would have made the project a lot more appealing. I would also find out more about the object, so I could add more text. I feel like I didn’t have enough in some.Â
Project three - How A Memory LooksÂ
I wanted to do this project all year, and I was really underwhelmed by the results. I think I had an image in my head that I wanted to achieve and didn’t manage to. Saying that, I did create some really different outcomes, which were very interesting and I liked the concept behind my project. With memory loss being one of the most known symptoms of dementia, highlighting that allows people to understand better.Â
I was very pleased with my book. I kept the design simple, but I think it turned out well. I like the way that the text draws you in at the top of the page with one quick fact, then it’s explained in more detail on the other page.Â
I also think my adverts turned out quite well too. I was really pleased with how the image looked as it faded on screen. I think this was an effective way to do it, because it also highlighted the progessive aspect of dementia.Â
Project four - Help Them RememberÂ
I wasn’t overly pleased with my printed outcome for this because of the quality. On screen though, I liked them. I’m not entirely sure that the colour scheme worked, but I liked them nonetheless.Â
In terms of the imagery, I really liked them and I think that I managed to capture the concept of remembering and forgetting well. I stuck to a house setting to make the photographs feel comfortable and as if they were really in the house of someone with dementia - which I thought went well.Â
I feel like I know have a much better understanding of medium format photograph, which I am pleased about.Â
Project three + Project four:Â
I used expensive materials for these two projects (medium format film, which is £5.50 a roll and £8 to get developed and polaroid film which is £15) which meant that I was very limited in terms of how much images I could capture and I think this affected both projects slightly.Â
