Born Chester Burnett in in White Station, Mississippi, Howlin’ Wolf (June 10, 1910 – January 10, 1976) learned how to play the guitar from Charley Patton and the harmonica from Sonny Boy Williamson II. After serving in the US Army, he lived in West Memphis, Arkansas, where he was discovered by Ike Turner who was a freelance talent scout. Turner arranged for him to record for Sam Phillips at the Memphis Recording Service (later known as Sun Studio). Sun Records had not yet been formed, so Phillips licensed the recording to Chess Records. His first single was a double-sided hit with “Moanin’ at Midnight” and “How Many More Years” released in 1951. Turner also had Howlin’ Wolf record for the Bihari brothers at Modern Records which caused a conflict with the Chess brothers. Leonard Chess was able to secure Howlin’ Wolf's contract and he relocated to Chicago. In Chicago, he assembled a new band which at times included Otis “Big Smokey” Smothers, Jimmy Rogers, and Buddy Guy. In 1956, he released one of his most popular and influential songs “Smokestack Lightning.” His first album, Moanin’ in the Moonlight, was released in 1959. During the blues revival in the 1960s, he found a new audience among white youths and toured Europe. He continued recording for Chess until his death in 1976.
Memphis blues musician Sleepy John Estes (1899-1977)
Born into a sharecropping family he was a field hand himself until the 1920s when he began playing and recording professionally. His nickname came from the fact that he was famously lethargic, often drifting off to sleep even in social situations. He was rediscovered during the folk and blues revival of the early 1960s, beginning the second phases of his performing and recording career, which lasted until he died.
