Dating and Pets

Perhaps for a while, it has just been you and your "best friend" - a beloved cat or dog or ferret or bird or other pampered animal roommate. You might even have more than one pet who have kept you company and been your primary relationship(s) as you've been living single. Then it happens, you meet someone special and may begin seeing quite a bit of each other. How can you integrate your "new somebody" into your household pet menagerie? Is there anything that can be done to make sure everyone lives happily ever after?

A lot will depend on the personality of your pet or pets. Some pets are gregarious and open and welcoming and some are shy. Others can be downright territorial and protective. It's going to be necessary to take a good look at your pet's personality and try to decipher what the best approach may be to incorporating a new human into your house - even if it's only part-time or occasional. While it will matter whether your new significant other likes animals and pets, it will also matter whether your pet can adjust to a new human.

Fill in your new boyfriend or girlfriend about the animal dynamics in your home. If he or she knows where the cookies or treats are kept, what Fido's favorite toy is or some other insider information, he or she may be able to win your pet over sooner. Instead of associating your new friend as an intruder, the pet will likely begin to associate him or her with pleasantries and treats.

One of the biggest mistakes pet people make is that as soon as a new person comes into their life, the pet or pets get shoved aside, ignored or relegated to sleeping on the floor (instead of their cozy "other side" of the bed. This causes the pet to resent the intrusion of the new person who has usurped his cherished position in the household. Instead, try showering your pet with attention whenever your significant other is around. Talk very sweetly, offer treats, play with a special toy. If you have a dog, get your new friend to help you exercise the dog or go out and play. This way, the pet will associate the new person with really good stuff - instead of being ignored or forgotten about.

Finally, make sure the pet(s) has a special place where he can go that is protected and private. Dogs and cats need a safe place where they can go to nap or have some down time when things feel strange or out of control. This will likely be necessary if there is a new person in their home.
