Engelhardt beside being a demon is also Mendryka’s guardian. He found her (more precisely bought her) when she was barely ten years old and took her to travel with him. Mendryka grew up looking at him with admiration which has been slowly changing into love of a young woman for a man, which is something Engelhardt is unable to reciprocate.
