Meng Xiaodong was a Chinese opera performer who did male roles as a woman. The characters she played were older gentleman (老生), refined scholars like famed strategist Zhuge Liang. I was so amazed to learn about her because I didn’t know women could play male roles in Peking opera. I love her gracefulness both in and out of costume.

Peking Opera star, 露兰春 Meng Xiaodong (1908-1977), often played male roles on stage. She had a love affair with "the king of Peking Opera" Mei Lanfang who often starred as refined and elegant women, and following the end of the affair in the 1930s, Meng became the concubine and eventually fifth wife of the famous Shanghai ganster Du Yuesheng.
