How to Take Care of your Mental Health
The following tips can be beneficial for your mental health:
Allow yourself time for conscious daydreaming – For example, you might find it helpful to close your eyes, block out the world, and picture yourself in a dream location. It could be the mountains, a quiet beach, an empty forest, or a favourite place from somewhere in your past. Breathe slowly and deeply, and allow the comforting environment to flood your mind with tranquility and peace.
Gather up and store positive emotional moments – Make a conscious effort to bring to mind times when you have experienced contentment, peace, pleasure, fulfillment, comfort, hope, tenderness, joy, or any other positive emotions. Allow yourself to stay with these memories and emotions.
Find ways of managing negative thoughts – Negative thoughts can be intrusive, loud, and insistent. Work on noticing the patterns, and finding ways of consciously interrupting these negative thoughts. Don’t allow them to get the upper hand. Note, however, that simply trying to suppress or block them out is rarely an effective approach to take. Distracting or actively comforting yourself – if you can’t deal with the problem right away – is often a helpful short-term solution.
Get into the habit of only doing one thing at a time – For example, if you are with friends, mute your cell phone, and focus on them. Really listen to what they are saying. Don’t allow your mind to wander off.
Make time for regular exercise – This will improve your mood, and your wellbeing. If you join a class or an exercise group, it can also help to counteract loneliness as it connects you to those who share a similar interest.
Find a hobby you enjoy – This can be relaxing and highly rewarding. It also bring some balance into your life as it allows you to do something you actually enjoy – and not just something you’re required to do.
Set yourself some goals – They don’t have to be large or ambitious goals. It can be something as simple as finishing a book you always wanted to read; or getting out of the house, and walking around the neighbourhood each day; or learning how to crochet; or phoning your friends instead of waiting for them to call you. Whatever the goal, reaching it will be rewarding, and will give you a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment.
Try journaling – Giving voice to your feelings, and expressing yourself, can be a vital outlet and a way to find relief. It can also help you gain a more accurate perspective on relationships, problems and issues you are facing.
Look for the humour – Life can get very serious at times. So when you hear, see, or think about something that’s amusing, try sharing that amusement with someone else as well. It can be a great mood change, and can turn your day around.
Don’t forget to treat yourself well – Book yourself a seat for a concert or a game. Cook yourself a tasty meal. Take some time out for yourself - just sit on a park bench, or read a magazine. And whatever you have chosen, do it simply for you.
