"Whatever you set your mind to you can achieve" an often heard affirmation. In some respects this is very true but in others it is so wrong as it suggests that willpower is enough which we now know it is not. The reason people so often fail at their goals is because they continue to carry emotional baggage with them. They don't realise this as the baggage is safely stowed in their subconscious like a suitcase in the hold of an aeroplane when you go on holiday. Whilst you are going about your business the memory of significant emotional events (SEEs) is quietly stowed away like a sulky teenager waiting for its opportunity to hijack you. The process for stimulating our subconscious is relatively simple. We are exposed to a stimulus (S) through our senses - we see it, hear it, smell it, touch it, taste it or feel it. That stimulus causes us to access a memory which is related (M) in our memory matrix. This in turn leads to an emotional reaction (E) - a phobic response, an urge to eat, anxiety or any other habitual emotional reaction. Next comes the response (R) we act on the urge to eat by bingeing, we pick up that cigarette, we have a panic attack at the sight of the spider. So, now we have an understanding of what happens in a split second we can develop strategies to stop repeating the habitual responses of a lifetime. More to follow...
