Kim Hyesoon, tr. by Don Mee Choi, from Autobiography of Death; “Face of Rythm”
a million lifetimes
We live in a culture that stigmatizes certain mental illnesses like for instance depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and the like or even just being neurodiverse, whereas serious personality disorders like narcissism, sociopathy, APD and others that really cause incredible harm not only to individuals but even to the masses are overlooked (not that anyone should be stigmatized at all).
It has a lot to do with ruthlessness being seen as a strength, even a rewarded trait (see Trump, Elon Musk, etc), an advantage in an economic system that favors the survival of the 'fittest', profit over people. And it's not a coincidence that a lot of politicians and billionaires happen to very visibly display a complete lack of empathy.
Society needs to make sociopathic behaviours being culturally seen as something unacceptable. The education system needs to incorporate awareness on all mental illness, including these disorders and behaviors in order to detect them and at an early stage and intervene with humane therapy. We would avoid so much trauma, suffering and harm.
I might be naive, ignorant or unrealistic, but we can't deny we have a general problem of sociopathy in the political landscape. Stigma to the mentally ill also causes a great deal of harm, which is crazy considering that around 30% of the population suffers from some sort of mental illness. I am far from being an intellectual or an expert, and obviously can't foresee the implications, but it's a problem that needs to be addressed.
Edit: People with Cluster B personality disorders are in fact stigmatized, when many don't have any intention whatsoever of causing any harm. I realized thanks to the comments, that this topic is far too complex to be in a Tumblr post. Perhaps I just desperately wish there was a way to generally prevent assholes of reaching positions of power and for people to understand better mental illness and neurodiversity. I am still learning myself.
You have to realize how insane it looks to casually talk about and normalize all of the fucked up anti cluster b personality disorder posts and articles. “crushing the narcissist” “get rid of the narcissist in your life” “bpd is toxic manipulative” “I swear I saw my bpd ex’s eyes turn all black when they started splitting..” like what the fuck
People often only support the neurodivergence they palatable. Those with personality disorders are also neurodivergent, they are not people who decided to become evil stereotypes. A narcissist is a wounded person, a borderline person is a wounded person, a sociopath is a wounded person. Stigmatization runs rampant, implicit bias only deepening in the damage.
Yes, some cluster b people have maladaptive coping mechanisms, or are not self aware, and can be difficult or hurt someone. But honestly, tell me someone, cluster b or not, who HASN’T hurt someone. Tell me how constant neurotypical conversational platitudes and casual lying is different than “cluster b manipulation.” It’s just more fun to dog pile onto someone that’s mentally ill, I suppose.
I am quiet bpd, vivacious hpd, and grandiose npd and additionally can occasionally dip into aspd traits. Cluster B as fuck. I am self aware and *constantly* work to manage myself, balancing my flaring emotions and cold logic to reach a healthy (wise) middle. Imagine spending all that time working on yourself but people can’t see past the stigma.
Try and overcome bias. Anyone from any background has the potential to be a bad person, don’t let someone’s illness automatically paint them as a demon.
