so ticked off when I hear "the youth is too leftist" or "young people are radicalized". bitch if we were, we'd be seizing the means of production. i personally think we aren't left and radical enough
We live in a culture that stigmatizes certain mental illnesses like for instance depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and the like or even just being neurodiverse, whereas serious personality disorders like narcissism, sociopathy, APD and others that really cause incredible harm not only to individuals but even to the masses are overlooked (not that anyone should be stigmatized at all).
It has a lot to do with ruthlessness being seen as a strength, even a rewarded trait (see Trump, Elon Musk, etc), an advantage in an economic system that favors the survival of the 'fittest', profit over people. And it's not a coincidence that a lot of politicians and billionaires happen to very visibly display a complete lack of empathy.
Society needs to make sociopathic behaviours being culturally seen as something unacceptable. The education system needs to incorporate awareness on all mental illness, including these disorders and behaviors in order to detect them and at an early stage and intervene with humane therapy. We would avoid so much trauma, suffering and harm.
I might be naive, ignorant or unrealistic, but we can't deny we have a general problem of sociopathy in the political landscape. Stigma to the mentally ill also causes a great deal of harm, which is crazy considering that around 30% of the population suffers from some sort of mental illness. I am far from being an intellectual or an expert, and obviously can't foresee the implications, but it's a problem that needs to be addressed.
Edit: People with Cluster B personality disorders are in fact stigmatized, when many don't have any intention whatsoever of causing any harm. I realized thanks to the comments, that this topic is far too complex to be in a Tumblr post. Perhaps I just desperately wish there was a way to generally prevent assholes of reaching positions of power and for people to understand better mental illness and neurodiversity. I am still learning myself.
I hate when I see people go 'oh America isn't that bad! It's great! Everyone on the news must just be exaggerating or picking the worst parts of it to focus on!' and yeah, in a lot of places America is pretty great. We have things and freedoms not many countries have. On the surface, people are happy, welcoming, contented, and kind. But those people are the lucky ones.
For LGBTQ+ people, America isn't great. It's scary, and dangerous, and people aren't kind.
For plus-sized and conventionally unattractive people, it's not great. It's mean, and judgmental, and harsh.
For disabled people, it isn't great. It's overwhelming, and unfair, and cruel.
For poor people, for immigrants, for sexual assult victims, and other marginalized and/or discriminated against people, America isn't great. That's the reality that I fear is being ignored, especially with the World Cup. So many people are coming into America, seeing all the privileges that the average citizen has, feeling baffled and awed and like the media has been lying to them about America, and they're forgetting about the many struggles that so many other Americans face. It's great that people from other nations are coming here, and feeling welcomed, and are happy here. It's great that there are so many American citizens who are happy, and get to enjoy the freedom and privilege that comes with being an American. But I'm scared that the World Cup will just further hide the very real, very scary things happening in America.
the merriam webster dictionary defines woke as “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues.” if you see awareness as a bad thing you miiiight be part of the problem. just saying 🤷
No poetry today - rather something that's been rattling around in my mind, and it'll poison my heart if I do not write it down.
The echo chambers continue to grow larger and noisier. The more we separate from each other due to opinions and thoughts, the more we crumble as a society. Accept the discomfort of not knowing everything. Speak with someone who holds a different perspective. Listen rather than react. Disagree without malice or violence. Expand your mind beyond what's on the media or on your social feed. Are your thoughts your own? Or are they a product of what you have consumed? Have you been manipulated to hate? To not look past what you've been told? If you find yourself answering yes, it's okay. You aren't flawed, or morally wrong, or less than. We are human and capable of change, even when all seems lost. Don't let opinions keep you captive and blind to genuine empathy and intellectual growth. Do not let yourself be misguided by those who continue to further divide us.
With love,
Ruby x

League of Villains Representation
What I find really interesting about the League of Villains, specifically the ones who made it to the final war arc, is that they all represented something wrong with society. Spinner = racism, Dabi = abuse and neglect of a young child, Toga = stigma against mental health disorders, and Shigaraki = grooming. Like a lot of modern antagonistic characters, they weren't doing evil for the sake of evil. They did it because society and/or their families failed them, and so the only way they could possibly keep living in this world is to change it.
And maybe I'm looking too much into this, but having Dabi, Toga, and Shigaraki die is like saying that these issues aren't that important to think about, or they're more hidden. Racism is something that is talked about a lot, and having Spinner live on is like a reminder that racism is still present. And I think it's true when I say people don't take abuse, mental health, and grooming as seriously as racism.
Side note: These two pages are so beautiful because they show Shigaraki's growth of no longer thinking of the league as a tool for revenge, instead, he sees them as people who don't belong in this society like him. And while romanticising villainy is not correct, I do like how he is seen as a hero to those who are suffering from modern societal standards.
