I got a mentor match!

I'm very excited about it.

I am slightly concerned about how writing my introductory email is unearthing wells of weirdly fantastical ideas about what it takes to make a thing go right. Like, I know I have to be myself, but I also want to be liked... My saving grace is a hope that my mentor will be as grounded and optimistic as I actually am and that we can see and appreciate that in one another. If I am true to myself, I can be esteemed for my most authentic self; if I'm fake here, I might be stuck trying to maintain a persona I did a lot to get rid of before.

Mentor Match Update

So, I learned that my "match" was a potential match.

When I was invited to, I began writing my potential match an email. It was kind of bad, at first. I was trying too hard to be liked and some relics of this survived to the final draft that may have looked like I wasn't trying quite hard enough, but it was enough that she emailed me back with her availability when she was in the office a few days later.

We had a Zoom meeting and it seemed to go really well. I was very excited and her words nearly matched my feelings, but it has been nearly a week now and I haven't heard anything official beyond a reminder to send a thank you note (which I proceeded to do-- it was better than my introduction email) and reminders that mentors and mentees must be focus area matches.

Are these sorts of long waits common for mentor matches? I waited 4 months to get this one potential match and school starts next month, so I'm concerned...
