Recruiting for a Secondary Educator Community

Being a new teacher can feel isolating sometimes. We're going through a lot learning to teach effectively in a global pandemic, prepping for the edTPA, and just being "adult" humans.

Some of it stinks. Some of it hurts.

Still, there's so much joy in this work! We meet lovely young people on their best and worst days and we engage with people who are and are becoming system enforcers and change makers. We engage in dynamic work whereby everyone open enough can be changed. They're witty, lively, and human.

So, I'm on a mission to form a community of Transformative Intellectuals who see students as people, want to share ideas, create some amazing projects, make friends, and fight burnout together.

"Why I quit my job" a paragraph assigned by my father

I didn't quit, exactly... I declined the next assignment. There are things that are more important than six weeks of paychecks. It is more important to see my grandmother. It is more important to keep my grandparents' nonprofit in good standing. At the site where I worked, staff serve in 6 week rotations and our clients-- who are already facing discomfort with our safety policy-- can expect to see the same staff member roughly 5 days per week for that length of time. I was consistent through my first two rotations, but in the next 6 weeks, I expect to have at least one week where I am unavailable. I decided that not committing to another assignment would allow my clients the stability that a new staff member could provide and me some peace of mind and room to grow through the availability I have to support some of my most important people.

Does this time allow me to be the person I want to be? Yes

Will it lead me toward my professional goals? Believe it or not, yes. I am able to prepare for grad school as well in this time. I am able to do some relevant reading and writing. I may even do some work that will put me in the position that my clients were in when they came to me and be reminded what it feels like to be the person with the need.

I'm not sure if I'll finish reading this book, but I kind of hope I will...

All I'll say for the moment is it reminds me of that Lizzy McAlpine song, "Ceilings" for some reason...

I woke up around 1:30 AM and cried because I fell asleep before 11 PM last night and I had an 11:59 submission deadline. I thought finishing my assignment would be easy, but there were missing prerequisite pieces because I returned my students' work last year and they did not have computers to submit assignments until nearly November. I don't have my feedback notes. I don't know if I can do the assignment at this point. I am very disappointed in myself and I am unsure if I can proceed with induction this year.

I wonder if I should try to start next year. I am not sure if I want to commit to staying in one place next year, though...

For a long time, I was really depressed and I have some patterns that I haven't shaken, yet, from that season of my life. I habitually struggle from October through February/March. Two of my grandparents passed away in the early part of the year (one in January when I was in 5th grade and the other 2 months before my high school graduation) when I was in compulsory education.

I think I searched for the missing stuff for 30 minutes to an hour before just falling into the hole because I kept trying to find someone to vent to and the bird site has too many distractions and so does the black T app. It's just occurred to me that I could just grade something else and use that. Whether or not my work will be accepted is up to my grader, but more of my work as a professional will be done.
